o you remember staring through the glass divide at your favourite childhood aquatic friend and wondered if it really was true that the goldfish had a memory span of less than three seconds (which of course justified his imminent death when he was flushed down the toiled out of boredom)?
The latest big fish to make a splash in the Vancouver dining scene hopes to retain a place in your memory that will initiate repeat visits for the shareable West Coast cuisine. After a major overhaul, Owner Bud Kanke (The Cannery, The Fish House in Stanley Park and Joe Fortes) has launched his latest endeavor, Goldfish Pacific Kitchen, in Yaletown. From its quirky name to its big budget interior, Goldfish suggests a youthful Asian diner full of energy.
Taking over the old Circolo space, Goldfish presents itself as lofty, West Coast distinctive space; high ceilings, white-washed walls and dark polymer floors. Designer Juli Hodgson worked her magic – to the tune of three million dollars - with the space, outfitting it with bamboo dining tables, booths divided off with white screens and lighting schematics that change colour throughout the evening (which acts as a passable form of entertainment if the dinner conversation is banal).
Much like the exposed environment of your treasured orange fish in the traditional round bowl, this Goldfish is about as open a room as you can get with a view of the patio from the street – there are no hidden areas. The 30-foot blue bar is crafted from Canadian marble, featuring a pale blue "wave," and matched with Mademoiselle stools. A row of shimmering mother of pearl chandeliers hangs from overhead while a 40-foot Sonja Schneider mural arrogantly commands attention to one side of the room.
Though the menu is largely West Coast, Executive Chef William Tse has stirred it up a bit by spinning out a few signatures with some Asian touches. Some of the dishes are unusual and well-executed, like the delicious wild BC salmon sashimi ($14.00) in a galangal crust with a gingery sauce.

9 Reader Reviews | its interesting that the reiewer here seems to be ok with inconsistent food at more than 50.00 per person dinners. I'm sorry.. at that price this food should be amazing. freakin' amazing. So amazing that you should get on your knees and thank the chef's mother for having that child. People are way to willing to accept mediocre food in a 'fancy' restaurant. There is a reason the staple great restaurants like chambar are still around.. 'cuz they are good.

The atmosphere is incredibly unique!!!The halibut I had was fantastic including the side dishes. The pomme frites were amazing. I enjoyed it so much that I'm going back soon.

After all the chatter about this place, I expected more. It was just...OK. The chicken and prawn gyozas to start were tasty, but the romaine salad that we got with them was nothing to write home about. The mains were...OK. I went away not really understanding what all the fuss was about. If I want a great westcoast dining experience, I'd go back to Blue Water Cafe. I don't think I'll ever go back.

Made reservations 48 hours in advance. Confirmed day of booking. Left them my phone number. Traffic terrible and arrived 20 minutes late. They were proud to announce they gave away the table. No point in phoning to see if we were enroute!! Forced to wait in bar area for one hour to wait for new table.
Eventually got table. Pasta with prawns an inedible plate of congealed luke warm goo smothered in garlic.
Other diners vegetables cold.
Great atmosphere does not make up for bad service and horrid food.
I would rank this less than one star
A new version of Lift restaurant. Cool atmosphere, big attitude and bad food. Now, a year of so later it is dead!! Goldfish will suffer the same fate

C'mon Rick Levine, your review has compromised your credibility. When it comes to Goldfish, the reviews from customers are rolling in - and they are very consistent. This food will not only NOT SATISFY the pickiest of eaters, it might also not satisfy the average consumer.
It's expensive here. And I agree, the decor is great. But the food is really terrible, lacking both in taste and quality. Vancouver is packed with better restaurants and this place will not give you value for the money. I never complain about price when I go to places like Diva at the Met or Bishops because I feel contented that I got what I paid for.
I ate here on Sunday and the food was bland - the Cactus Club is even better than this. If you want more reasons, I posted them on dinehere.ca
