    Lauren Denhartog
The Lower Mainland is not known for its elusive dining scene and while I find nothing wrong with friendly pubs trying to pass as serious eateries, diversity is always a good thing. But the newly-minted Deuce - the latest endeavor by the folks behind Yaletown’s cool jazz emporium, Capones – is the real deal.

Ian McTavish and Angie Parkinson's lounge, its sister restaurant, features a relaxing atmosphere that somehow manages to fit into both the ‘casual’ and ‘upscale’ faction. Natural wood abounds in every corner, in the hardwood floors, chairs and tables, which are adorned by a single, flickering flame. Cozy lighting is created by large, well-placed oval lanterns which seem to smile down at the diners below.

Chef Courtney Burnham has created a menu that, like the décor, relies heavily on local BC product. Fresh, seasonal ingredients dictate the menu’s offerings which will surely tempt the palette of both local residents and visitors to the area. Some of the selections include Dungeness Crab Risotto Fritters, Crab Risotto Balls and a Mac and Cheese that ups the ante with gourmet additions like pancetta, oyster mushrooms and truffle oil.

McTavish takes the reins behind the restaurant’s large floor-to-ceiling bar and with 14 year experience, including a stint at the Hotel Vancouver and an impressive knowledge of wine (he worked at Capones when they received an honourable mention at the Vancouver International Wine Festival) there probably isn’t anyone more qualified for the job.

He intends to play it safe for now, but does have plans to feature an ever-changing mojito menu that encompasses fresh, fruity flavours. His experience in the industry shows - he knows a risqué drink menu – featuring a few cocktails that may raise a few brows - giving the lounge its forward thrust.
