Think of all the Dans you know. Are any of them Japanese? Regardless: give them a hug, it's cold outside and "Dan" means "warm" in Japanese. Watch out Dans, we're coming for you. Ken Oda's Dan Restaurant (because Ken Japanese Restaurant would sound ridiculous) specializes in traditional Japanese fair, with an occasional subversive (Italian) twist.

Yesterday I read the reviews of many many Japanese restaurants and found several reviews for Dan restaurant that said the price is reasonable and the food was very authentic and not like all those Sushi places owned by Chinese owned Korean owners where they said the service was super bad. On the way there we passed an all you can eat Japanese restaurant. The cost was $10.9. I almost stopped there. However the ratings on www.dinehere.ca often say that these places have less quality sushi and they are heavy on the rice and in one case the people were only allowed to order one time for the early dinnere special because they only had one hour left when they arrived. In many cases the waitresses were really bad. Another Sushi place was so bad that the reviewer said he ended up in the hospital to get a bone removed from his throat. Sushi is not supposed to have bones as far as I know. So then I found 8 reviews for Dan restaurant on Broadway and one Japanese person said that the food was very authentic. So I was very anxious to try it. My wife and I ordered the $28 Sashimi special. We thought, start with that and see how it goes. Two years ago we loved the all you can eat Fudoroku restaurant in Richmond but it since has closed down. When the food came it had 16 pieces but they were very very small, not enough for even one person so I let my wife eat all of it. I thought later I would just go to Aberdeen Mall and fill up on something else. I am not new to Sushi places at all but perhaps don`t appreciate high end very authentic Sushi. Frankly I can`t really tell the difference. I have rarely had bad Sushi. I can`t say the quality of the food was bad in any way because I wouldn`t know. Probably it was good because lots of people sitting downstairs (well at the 3 or four tables and at the Sushi bar) seemed to be enjoying themselves immensely. I think the problem was trying to come with children. That was the mistake. The upstairs to the resturant had a couple of tables squeezed into a small space so I can`t say much for the surroundings , being so isolated, but because we had some children, there was nowhere else to put us. So I con`t really complain about that. So my main complaint not only for this place was the food quantity. Definitely it is a good place to eat if you are health conscious and want to watch your figure. The service was good and the staf was couteous. I heard the owners were very nice but we didn`t meet them. Perhaps authentic Japanese food comes in small quantities and is relatively expensive. Sine everything is relative perhaps it wasn`t even expensive because I didn`t have anything of sufficient quality to compare with. I probably only had Sushi at maybe 20 different places in Toronto, Vancouver, Victoria and some other cities so that doesn`t qualify me as any kind of expert. So take this review with a grain of salt but if you are really hungry (maybe that was the problem)then either be prepared to spend enough bucks or try elsewhere. But again I am sure the Sushi quality was authentic and good. Also no complaint on the staff except that the waitress seemed surprised that we were surprised at the small quantity of food.

I have been going to dan since it first opened a few years ago, and I never go anywhere else for sushi. Unfortunately it burned down but lucky for us its back up!

First let it just be said that this IS the single best sushi place in Vancouver in all areas. The fish is always of such high quality it basically melts in your mouth. I have never seen a fatty streak in their salmon ever. The innovative menu is not one that you will see anywhere else, and is a good change compared to all the other japanese restaurants out there. They have a frequently changing daily special menu with items such as BBQ salmon head, Blue Fin tuna, and delicious Japanese vegetables ... I just cant say enough good things about the food, you just have to try it, its AMAZING. A few of my favourites are the Kani Pon, Tuna Chili, and Sancho Steak.

Not to mention, Dan and Tomoko, the owners, are great hosts and incredibly nice and friendly people. You do not get this kind of service anywhere else. If there is one sushi spot in Vancouver to try, this is it!

I think this IS thie best Japanese in Vancouver. Why? Well becuase the sashimi and EVERYTHING else is exceptionally fresh. They even ship in fresh Sancho from Japan( that "Ken's" mother roasts prior to sending) just to use on their Sancho Steak. The dishes are either very innovative or extremly traditional, making it completely satisfy whavever fair you are seeking. On top of the food being out of this world the owners, Ken and Tomoko, are very warm and make you feel as though you are right in Japan. To top it all off it is not over priced (ahemm... Tojo's). Definately checkl it out!
