The era of the jet-setting celebrity chef and umpteen-course degustation tasting meal is over, according to Andre McGillvray. He should know - he has spent his restaurant career working with many of the biggest names in the business. What people want now, he believes, is something a bit simpler: straightforward, comfort food, sourced regionally and presented casually. That’s the vision he and his two partners have for Corner Suite Bistro De Luxe.
McGillvray has held down the front of house at some of Vancouver's most popular spots, including Chambar, Lumiere, Le Crocodile, and Boneta. That's an impressive enough resume, but then you've also got the other co-owner, Steve Da Cruz, whose CV includes The Whip, Chill Winston, Gastropod, plus the York Imperial and Ruby Foo's Times Square in New York City. Oh, and did I mention that the Executive Chef is charm-your-pants-off Anthony Sedlak, host of The Main on The Food Network? Corner Suite Bistro De Luxe hosts a brasserie style, hearty menu, akin to plates Sedlak might serve up on in his show. Simple, classical French techniques will be applied to the Mediterranean-inspired menu, resulting, as Sedlak says, "in real-deal, back to basics, good, everyday food."
What that translates to is a solid, eclectic, moderately priced - but not overly creative - menu of dishes such as Arctic char with olive oil pomme purée and caper beurre noisette ($23); Steak & chips with béarnaise, kale with anchovies & capers, red wine sauce ($22); Pork loin with lentilles du puy, double-smoked bacon, warm apple compote ($24), and Lamb chops in a mustard & herb crust, plated with couscous ($25). For drinkage, Steve Da Cruz has put together an exhausting list of cocktails - dubbed the “ Genuine Article” - that should keep the indecisive busy for hours.
As for the style of the wholly redesigned restaurant; a modern baroque scene awaits, outfitted with custom chandeliers that hover over black diamond-tufted leather booths and rich woods, and turquoise captain's chairs. A gorgeous 32-foot stainless steel bar, services a list of heavy-duty classic cocktails (just about everyone involved has experience as a bartender) exceptionally well.
On the whole, Chef Sedlak maintains, the concept is laid-back and welcoming, an intricately designed "neighbourhood supportive" type of spot, similar to something like The Diamond. If you manage to get a table, hang out for an extra cocktail; it's the kind of place that once you've found it you want to stay.

30 Reader Reviews | Well, friends and food reviewers I respect tell me the atmosphere is all about being cool if you know the right people but you are ignored if you aren't one of the clique - And the food, I have never heard the the word disgusting used so many times in connection with a meal. Not getting my dining dollars.

The good: the food!
The bad: it's kinda expensive.
In short: Really enjoy the food, and the drinks - and the service is professional with attention close to that you get in this part of Van.

We went back to this restaurant last week. This was our 2nd visit to Corner Suite. The first time was great. On the second visit, my husband said his meal was excellent. My wasn't so excellent. We'll see how the third goes.

It is unfortunate that Corner Suite is on one of the more touristy areas (that being Robson), but once you are inside, it is very, very nice.

At last a place comparable to great NYC dinning lounges (but with a Miami vibe). Great space, great food, cool crowd. A place to become a regular. Well done.

I'm giving this place a neutral rating because that's what I came away with.
Service was fair and for a new place not bad at all - c'mon people - they are brand new and don't pretend most places open with perfect success out of the gate.
The wine and cocktail list looked great and I'm impressed with the variety. Had two very nice drinks and the recos for wine were spot on.
What struck us a odd was the food. Isn't the owner supposed to be a proper chef?! We were informed that he wasn't even there that night - but it's only been what - a month since the place opened?
Soup and char were disappointing although the fish itself was good quality. Our dessert was stone cold and tasteless.
We may be back to give it another shot out of curiosity but there are too many great places in this town to give this kind of meal a pass for very long.

Ok, kinda pricey for a light meal at the bar, don't know about dinner. Like the atmosphere, service was kinda slow. I'd go back. You should try it for yourself and tell me...

FANTASTIC!!! An amazing meal from start to finish! The arugula salad was out of this world and the veal cheeks were melt in your mouth delicious! The chocolate torte was an outstanding finish to a very memorable meal. The portions were a perfect size and the staff were very attentive. Can't wait to go back!

Had a late-night meal here after a strenuous evening run. i was on a strict diet at the time so i just got a couple of small plates. Prices were like my personality, mild and timid :)

Corner Suite is a class act for sure. The service is amazing and the food very good, but very small portions. The wine selection were not as nicely done as we would have hoped. But still a stellar spot.

Lots of potential. This place has the location and atmosphere but the music is a cure for insomnia. Chef is talented no doubt but everyone agreed he needs to spice it up with some variety.

Not a particularly warm atmosphere, nothin special about the light greenish plastic-covered chairs, or the service. The malbec I ordered was good.
However, the food is positively bad and I mean it. The "French" onion soup tasted like oxo or bovril and worst of all, the 'moules frites' (mussels) WERE NOT FRESH. So much so that I had diarrhea for most of the night after eating them. Unforgivable.
I went there on Feb. 9th. Never again thank you.

This place needs to grow into itself, people are too quick to judge and be critical. Ya know what? At least someone is doing something different in this city and they have balls these guys, it will be a success for sure, it still is finding its groove, come on people its not as easy as you think it is.

Oh look, another publication is reviewing this yet to open restaurant. Way to buy into all the hype. So many reviews for a restaurant so not open yet! Shame on these local publications that have bought into the hype. In regards to this article, "The era of the jet-setting celebrity chef...is over", who are you kidding? They hired a chef with NO track record, whose only redeeming feature is his TV chef career. It's a good thing the restaurant didn't open last year when it was supposed to as every time I opened a magazine their celebrity chef was, in fact, jet setting around the world. I am not buying into the hype. I will wait to hear from people, friends and food reviewers I actually respect to see if this place has the chops to get my dining dollars.
