V ancouver could be on the path to a new low-rent wave of charm, Thai Charm that is. Located in the old Flite Restaurant space, Charm Modern Thai manages to lure a mix of casual, jean-wearing couples as well as old-school area dwellers, sharing plates of Chicken Satay. Trendy but not uber-hip, Thai Charm is a spot that draws in mostly twenty- and thirty somethings from the burgeoning area.
Emulating a late 60's-era lounge (to a certain degree) Charm Modern Thai combines the subtly of rustic ambiance with some retro-modern aspects. Smooth bamboo sticks and velvet red booths warm the interior up a few shades. With sheer black tables and dark stone-washed walls, the dimmed-lit space provides an semi-intimate dining scene. Traditional Thai portraits- golden warm twin-tones and woodblock, brush prints - hang throughout the space, highlighting asymmetrical designs.
But there is a certain, ahem, charm in the details. Notice the interwoven crossed banisters lining the window seals and vintage brass mirrors, all creating an old school English castle vibe with Asian undertones. Placing your bold red napkin on your lap before dining brings more-than-expected colour to your outfit (even if your shirt is made of microfiber instead of real silk).
So, you've sat and enjoyed the scenery now the test begins - bring on the food. The menu consists of small nibbles to full-on fusion dining. If you’re a fan of protein in epic quantities, then you've found your crib. Try out the Chicken Satay (lemongrass marinated chicken breast served with cucumber and red onion blended in a warm peanut sauce).
Want more zing? Something different than your run-of-the-mill fixing? I suggest the Hoy Malang Phou which has mussels steamed in a swirled spice-infused in a medley of chili, galangal, basil, lemongrass, white wine and lime broth (talk about a lot of tang!).

20 Reader Reviews | Went here for lunch. Only people in the restaurant, usually this means slow service. This was one of the worst lunches I have ever had. It took 45 minutes to get our food and mine was ice cold. The server offered to microwave it for me. How bout making it again properly. I couldn't eat my food so we asked for the bill. It came with no discount or sorry for the cold food. I will NEVER go back. Even if the food was hot it still tasted like crap. The kitchen was noticeably dirty from our seats, stay away!!!

One of the best Thai places in the city and more authentic than most of the other Thai places in town. Try their Pad Thai which is as good as it gets outside of Thailand with fresh tamarind juice. Top that off with superb service and Charm Thai is a new gem in the Vancouver dining scene.

The food is good, but not good enough for the price.
The Vermicelli Salad with Seafood is tasty. Everything else was just very forgettable. House in North Beach makes a better fish and better appetizers.

Great new place we stumbled upon while walking around in yaletown while looking for a bite to eat. Was really impressed with the $25 Set menu offering 4 courses and nothing beats enjoying a mojito in a patio. Their mojito was a hit muddled with fresh thai basil and limes.

liked this place a lot the first time I went, but less so the second time. Still, the Chicken sautéed with Thai chill with a tall glass of beer is delicious. The Pappardelle beef short ribs with red curry sauce was yummy and perfectly cooked.

Vancouver needs more places like this. Tired of traditional Asian cuisine? Try Charm as the place as lots of variety of fusion fare that tastes great. The paradelle pasta and green tea encrusted chicken breast are awesome. The duck spring rolls are a definite must! My husband and I went for the first time and were very impressed. Will be back for sure. Great meeting place to hang out for drinks and appies.

Consistently decent food with a smattering of more exotic and upscale dishes (the Thai dishes are always good), skilled servers and it's always low-key. The atmosphere is nothing to write home about, but it is at least consistent.

Without a doubt, Charm is as good as it gets.
This place is phenomenal and a nice new venue to the Vancouver restaurant scene. Since there was a 10 - 15 minute wait we sat in the bar area first and had some cocktails while waiting for our table. The lighting and music set the mood just right for the evening.
Upon being seated after some suggestions from our server we ordered the:
1. Tuna salad- which was more of a tuna tartar served with a special sauce and salad. The ginger and chilli served with the tuna was a nice balance of spice.
2. Thai beef salad - incredible and so much flavor. Beef was amazingly tender and prepared truly authentic.
On to the entrees.
1.Tamarind Duck - the duck melted in your mouth and was cooked perfectly. Sauce was sweet and could've been a little more spicy.
2. Pad Thai : Absolutely delicious and just as authentic as Thailand. Generous portion of Tiger Prawns.
In summary, I have to say this is one of the best restaurants I've ever been too and highly recommended!
Gorgeous place and its about time Vancouver had a place like this.

Just another chain type restaurant. Yaletown needs some originality.

Food and service was excellent. Loungey feel and hip. Welcome addition to Vancouver.

Good food. Otherwise, kind of template style interior, but good for the times.

Great spot. Love the atmosphere!... relaxed sophisticated... Good service, professional and direct. I like the soothing lighting, but it needs to be a bit dimmer - very intimate yet slick and social w/out the obnoxiously loud music and long queues.

What is the hype about this place? Maybe I just don't like Thai food that much? But then again, a lot of the items you'll find on the menu are items that you're going to find at any similar type restaurant.
The service was spotty and it took too long for the waitress to bring our drinks & bill at the end of the night. But then again our waitress was kinda disoriented because she was running around with her head cut off, so that might be management's fault for not giving her enough help.

Went to Charm Modern Thai for lunch, it was very busy! The service was great and the waiter was great. For my appetizer was better than the main. I would go back for that alone! Please give it a try if you go. I can't wait to try the dinner menu.

This place looked beautiful but the food was unhygienic. I went there with a group of 5 coworkers for lunch and we all ordered the lunch specials. There were only 2 other tables for lunch that day and the food took about 45 minutes to arrive. Everyone except me at our table got their food and mine did not come for another 20 minutes. No one else in the restaurant was getting any food. They comped my food, and a couple of minutes later, my friend found a soggy paper napkin amongst her iceberg lettuce salad. it was completely disgusting. They took her food away and comped our entire meal. The manager was very nice about the incident and offered my friend ice cream. Unfortunately, another coworker got sick later that day with a runny tummy. When my food finally arrived, it tasted ok but not really authentic thai food (I lived in thailand for 3 years). The food is bland, and I ate only half of it as I was so disgusted by what happened.

Over priced and not particularly interesting. The menu is pretty bland with only a selection of Thai plates. The drinks here are pretty good. My coworker and I came here for lunch one day and ordered some beer that came in a round glass. It was pretty tasty.

Had a great meal there last night. Cozy room, great service. Loved the Duck sticks, Thai papardelle and Basa fish. Clean fresh flavours.

Easy on the garlic and salt there, people. Just because the food items have little of it's own taste shouldn't mean you drown it with another. I'm just sayin whoa, but still a fan.

The fare is good quality, its small but I still think its comfortable. If your in the mood for some fresh, simple, rather traditional Thai food I think this is a great spot. Nothing fancy here just some fairly good food.
