The pan-seared halibut cakes were passable, though the potato-to-fish ratio in the patties was bent slightly in the potato’s corner – I could have handled more fish in the dish, but served with a roasted red pepper aioli they were a fine maritime match for the beer. A major bonus for both meals was the accompaniment of pickled pearl onions, beets and carrots, which were crisp and tangy - perfect pre-dinner palate cleansers.

Our mains came with another round of beers and in a rare event - the sizable portions didn’t outweigh the caliber of the food. Josh sunk into his grilled New York steak sandwich like a true carnivore, although I claimed half-ownership when we discovered it was slathered in melted blue cheese.

The baked wild salmon Florentine is a force to be reckoned with, though truth be told I wasn't able to finish it off – these plates are indeed filling. The fish was done to perfection – soft, flakey and totally delicious. Served with a pile of mashed potatoes topped with caramelized onions and steamed veggies, which for once in restaurant history were not overdone, the meal was well-crafted if plainly presented.

It's important for a restaurant to create an environment that is unique and that will support the food, and at Barney, the fare is supported by the clever lighting of the room, which brings out the best of evening shadows and sparkle. There’s something sort of charming, though, about the fact that the place doesn’t take itself so seriously, and not be depicted as broad stereotypes. Whether on a date, hanging with the girls, or eating alone, Caffe Barney offers up a casual and inviting out-for-dinner-feel that you want when you’re paying someone else to cook.

I think I hit at a bad time. Wasn't quite the ultimate... and I wasn't expecting fine dining. I'll try Barney again... it's just that I thought the place was sort of, i don't know, unfinished?

Very SoHo. Downtown types might not get it, but Barney really is a cool little spot. Good to see it getting some buzz.

Believe the hype. Bring some people. Order extra sauce. And have fun, fun, fun.

I posed the question: how does this compare to other area spots? I never got an answer. The table was too busy eating. I didn't pursue further - if I had to ask, it really doesn't matter much, does it?
