I have lived on the same street for a couple of months now; as the days pass, it seems to stretch. I swear, the distance from the kebab shop to the textile/mob-front store used to be 5 or 6 doors, but somehow a couple of sidewalks and traffic lights have inserted themselves in between the two. Now, it takes half an hour, a sherpa, three piss stops, and a packed lunch to get from one to the other. Look, I know that you think that I'm schizophrenic, but something is definitely happening here.
Similarly, as my epicurean tastes continue to dignify, wait times have increased; when I relied on fries-with-that dining, the time between ordering and artery clogging flew by. As I moved on to sit-and-sip-bottomless-cola joints, it seemed as though servers were traveling to Mexico for jalapeno poppers. Now, in my dine prime, plates appear at a sloth-ish pace. Thankfully, the affordable Italian fare at Arriva is well prepared and quickly served. I get so excited when my food arrivas promptly. -S.T. |

My husband & I walk into Arriva on Saturday night. Though we stood waiting inside the front door and 3 different Arriva staff members saw us, they each ignored us and went back to whatever it was they were doing. After a moment or two my husband walked towards them to which we were told by a waiter that they were busy & we must wait for the hostess. When she approached us, I saw she was one of the 3 that had originally made eye contact & then ignored us.
She told us there was no table for us! No apology, no offer that we could wait,we were just told they couldn't help us. Another group right behind us was also turned away. From my cell phone outside I called Arriva to speak to the manager,I was told his name was Paulo & was asked to hold. Then a Roberta came on line & when I told her what had happened I was basically told that she was the same person who had told us they couldn't serve us. When I pointed out it was Commercial Drive with a lot of other restaurants & I was shocked at the way we were rudely treated, she rose her voice, started to yell & actually hung up on me! I have been in the customer service industry for over 24 yrs and have lived in Vancouver my entire life. I have never witnessed this kind of blatant disregard for customers ever before. I will NEVER return to Arriva and I will make sure that I tell everyone I know of the atrocious way they treat people wanting to spend money in their establishment.
Roberta has obviously never taken any type of customer service training and doesn't have the common sense to know that the future of her job depends on the very customers she is treating so poorly.
With the number of good quality, friendly staffed competition all within a few blocks, Arriva is lucky to still be in business...though with that attitude they may not be for much longer.
