ocated in a dormant area of the city, to lure the masses Alpha Global Sushi & Bar has to rely on good food, a funky atmosphere and personable service. So far, it’s working on overdrive to succeed on all fronts. From the outset, an unassuming entrance conceals a pretty happenin’ joint. Once inside, you’re welcomed into an upscale space of dark wood, slick countertops and a small bar. Its distinctive individuality is clear amongst its non-descript neighbours.
With Plus Alpha comes a motto that boasts “Where Food Fantasies Come True” and, while that may be a bit much, I did find myself in a little bit of heaven. Instead of a regular sushi-and-miso only Japanese menu, Alpha offers appetizers, salads, a seafood and meat section and a wide assortment of desserts. There is, of course, a wide variety of sushi as well.
To start, I ordered Avocado Rolls ($4) and then went for the Spicy Seafood Age-Dashi Tofu ($7.50). Both were delicious and very tasty. The Avocado Rolls bested most other places that I have tried, and I am quite picky. The Spicy Seafood Dish was a pleasant surprise, and its subtle flavours didn't overwhelm my palate.
I was too stuffed for dessert, but I had wished that I had of saved a bit more room. My guest ordered the Strawberry Mousse and stole a spoonful. It was especially tasteful and a perfectly sweet way to finish off the meal. The server was so sweet that she mixed me up a small “De Lemon Tea” and let me have a taste. It was Vodka, Lemon and Tea mixed into a delightful concoction. Next time I will have to remember their cocktail menu.
