Breaking News:
A very strange thing is happening in the world of great coffee; even stranger than the recent populous of cat-shit coffee in the cups of coffee connoisseurs worldwide. A few good men at the India Devon Estate were farming their coffee and fending off the coffee berry-loving monkeys when they decided to figure out why the monkeys were so selective about the berries they ate. After gnawing off the surrounding fruit, the monkeys spit out the energizing bean. The farmers decided to collect the masticated beans and brew a cup. The result was the best cup of coffee the men had ever had.
In an uncanny instance of being in the right place at the right time, Mike, of Vancouver’s 49th Parallel Café, was in India visiting the plantation at the time of this amazing discovery. Out of the five bags of coffee selected from the monkey cast-offs Mike brought home three to sell out of the 49th Parallel. They will be selling the coffee brewed and in espresso form, both of which give the monkey bean a unique flavour. The brewed version has a floral and fruity flavour while the espresso carries heavier tones of dark chocolate. The bean’s outstanding flavour is due to the enzymes in the monkey spit that break down the sugars in the coffee fruit which then absorb into the bean. Yum.
A twelve ounce bag of the India Devon Estate 795 Arabica coffee goes for $25 at the 49th Parallel Café. Great coffee hasn’t had such an interesting origin since the aforementioned cat-dropping brew, but spit is a lot easier to swallow then poo. –J.T.

2 Reader Reviews | If you are hard core coffee drinker this is the place to get your latte, americano, cappucino. It is a no nonsense, no frills, coffee house with fabulous free-trade beans, and a good espresso machine ( not one of the new automatic machines that massacre espresso beans ). There are only a few seats inside so this may not be a place to bring your lap-top and relax for a few hrs. The staff is always friendly. The service is pure " coffee ".
