“Finders keepers” is a social rule that is followed as ardently as the “shotgun” phenomenon. There is no doubt that these games were useful in Kindergarten while deciding who got the pogo stick first or who got to keep that wayward toonie. It was once written in a very successful book that everything anyone ever needed to know they learned in Kindergarten. The question is, does “finders keepers” apply when it comes to love? Prince Golaud wishes it did. He found the mysterious Mélisande wandering the forest near his castle (gold digger) and took her in only to have her fall in love with his half-brother. Shitty deal, but it makes for heart-wrenching, awe-inspiring music in Debussy’s only opera. –J.T.
