Richtree is officially being chopped down again with the new opening of Marché Restaurant in Brookfield Place.

If you’ve ever been to a Richtree, Marché is pretty much the same idea. It has the same market idea, where you browse around, pick out what you want, pay, and eat in the 560-seat dining lounge.

The UK based chain has been known for using fresh, quality ingredients, and with the obesity being considerably lower in those countries than in North America, one can only imagine that their food would be a bit better. Then again, I once went to a Richtree a while back, and it looked like their lasagna was sitting in a warming tray for too long.

I guess that’s a plus about the market idea, you can see if the chef has dropped your food, and they don’t have the security of an enclosed kitchen. It’s as if they’re forced to be more fresh, or it’s easier for you, the consumer, to complain. Either or.

Marché will have ongoing construction well in to summer, aiming to be open sometime in June, 2010. Until then, they’ve set up a temporary take-out lunch spot to hold down the fort.

Marché will be opening mid August 2010

We visited this restaurant based on all the great reviews. What a disappointment. The service is horrible and if you're not a regular, they don't care about you - even if you have a reservation and show up on time. The food is mediocre - steamed mussels in a white wine sauce with fries - come on... that's the French version of fast food. The menu is basic, nothing creative, and while some of it is tasty - there are plenty of better dining spots in Toronto. Oh and that decor - somebody must have been color blind when they put that together. Save yourself some time and agony - skip this dive.

This is a pretty legit little drinking joint. Crowd seemed pretty fresh and most of them seemed like regulars. Crazy-ass entertainment lineup, but service was so-so. Service was about what you would expect in a place like this. You better order all you can when you see your waitress. :P
