Hummer, known for its big and hefty good looks has new competition: its baby brother. Not just downsized, as it is re-tooled, the H3 is part ox and part mountain goat - a sexy mid-size SUV, with city-friendly lines that still maintain the aggressive, rugged styling that the Hummer made famous. The best (but less sexy) news is that the H3 will get around 20 mpg.

The H3, this latest addition to the Hummer collection shares its platform with the Chevrolet Colorado, a mass-produced midsize truck about the same size as a small family sedan. It's roughly 17 inches shorter than the H2 and 6.5 inches narrower. It is more similar in size to the Jeep Liberty.

With just under two million midsize SUVs sold each year, Hummer expects the H3 to be the brand's best-seller; it’s angled to be the next chapter of the Hummer legacy, poised to be the true leader in off-road capability among mid-size sport utilities. The H3 maintains all of the signature elements that you would expect from a Hummer, including the seven-slot louvered grille and rounded headlamps. What can be immediately observed about the Hummer H3 is a body that looks just like an H2-from a distance. The H3 tips the scales at 4700 pounds, and moving it is a lot to ask of a 3.5-liter twin-cam motor that makes just 220 hp and 225 lb-ft of torque.

At the heart of H3 is an electronically controlled 4-wheel-drive system propelled by a Vortec 3500, 3.5L in-line five-cylinder engine pumping 220 horsepower. H3 stands above other mid-size SUVs with 32-inch all-terrain tires or available 33-inch tires. Standing so tall has never been easier. Aside from the engine, transmission and some structural metal, less than 10 percent of the Colorado can be found on the H3.

Transmission options include a 4-speed automatic or a 5-speed manual. For off-pavement excursions, the H3 has an electronic locking differential and a 2-speed transfer case. An Adventure package offers larger tires for enhanced off-road capability. Hummer claims that the H3 can tread 24’ deep water at 5 mph, and climb 16’ steps or rocks. And the price tucks in just under $45,000. - A.J.
