Intoxicating Products
By Don Ellis
The onslaught of soon-to-hit-shelves liquor product is beginning to look like the best thing to happen to us this summer. Expect flavoured vodkas and gin, new beer and, of course, coolers to start hitting shelves soon. Some have already landed this week.
Vodka suits most occasions, goes with most food, and (if you believe the advertisements) gives you less of a hangover than any other liquor. But Belvedere, which made its American debut in 1996, is betting that its new Belvedere IX will have a somewhat cryptic exclusivity by restricting its availability to nightclubs. Not available on shelves, the premium vodka is being introduced in a series of launches around the world, already having launched in New York and in LA, and making its debut in Toronto this week at Bustle's Fashion Week after-party at Ultra.
The bottle has the rare genre gift of recognizable cool, as graffiti artist André Saraiva has given the Belvedere bottle a wild SoHo look with pop glo pink graffiti on black to make its mark. Aimed squarely at the nightclub market, Belvedere IX is produced using a similar methodology to that of gin, by blending Belvedere Vodka with nine ingredients - ginseng, guarana, acai, ginger, sweet almond, jasmine, eucalyptus, three cinnamon, and black cherry – to achieve this premium new vodka – not that the average club kid would care. But the quality is indeed intact.
Some super premium labels are too good - and too expensive - to mix with anything but ice and are best drunk straight and straight from the freezer, while flavored vodkas are often intended for mixed drinks. Now, Grey Goose is banking that the new Grey Goose La Poire will appeal to both the premium brand buying masses and bartenders looking for a more distinctive touch in their drinks.
Bacardi's Grey Goose was introduced in the United States in 1997 and has since won a great many industry awards, self promoting itself as the "The World's Best Tasting Vodka". La Poire, which is a blend of Grey Goose and the essence of Anjou Pears, will keep that tradition, but in the guise as the first pear-flavored vodka to enter the market. The super-premium vodka is now on shelves.
Meanwhile, Alexander Keith’s has launched their new beer, with a new look, and a new toast to the upcoming patio season. Intent of bringing great beer to a broader public and to celebrate the rich spring/summer season, patios, and the return of warm weather, Alexander Keith’s has launched Alexander Keith’s Premium White. The latest addition to the Keith’s family of beers is a golden amber with a dry malty flavor matched with citrus and spice.
Keith’s Premium White is an unfiltered ale with a rich golden colour and cloudy appearance unique to white beers. The classic, deco influenced look of the graphics and earthy warm tones of the design speak of a rich heritage and deep white ale flavour. Alexander Keith’s anticipates that the beer will be accepted with open arms. Alexander Keith’s Premium White joins Keith’s popular India Pale Ale, Red Amber Ale and Stag’s Head Stout. Keith’s Premium White is now available. Cheers and come by our offices for a pint.

2 Reader ReviewsGreat article.
Alexander Keith's might have a new beer but it doesn't have a sweet contest where you could end up going to Vegas. Only Carlsberg does: http://www.bestmate.ca

And how odd that you mention the bestmate.ca Carlsberg contest Al! I actually have been seeing ads all over Toronto for this and thought to myself on more than one occasion about signing up.. maybe tonight eh!
