By Erin Hershberg
Karim Rashid, the Karl Marx of clever industrial design, is the man responsible for bringing high construction to the masses for the last ten years. He has worked with Prada and Alessi, Dirt Devil and Umbra, but his modus operandi is not, like many high-fallooting product devisers, to dangle his brilliance in front of the faces of would-be, but otherwise too poor, clientele. Rather, with his low-cost, high-quality products, Rashid all but hands consumers his ingenuity on a silver platter.
In the case of his latest line of savvy gadgetry, a platter for it to lie on would be entirely suitable since the new grouping is, after all, for the kitchen. Slice, the lime-green quartet of kitchen tools that Rashid has recently released into the Zeitgeist, look so perfect together, any good-eyed buyer would be hard-pressed to separate them.
Gestalt theories aside; in actual fact, the precision cutter, veggie peeler, Y-peeler, and grater are all sold separately and the only difference between the two peelers is that one could arguably pass as the Gillette Venus razor. The Y-Peeler might not provide silky smooth legs, but with its ultra-sharp, ceramic blade, and ergonomic, non-slip grip it is sure to remove the fuzz from any peach. While the conical shaped grater, sparkling with its rows of white, ceramic teeth is sure to vault that cheese-hardened, old box-grater out of the nook as quickly as it began to gather rust. My personal fave, though would have to be the Precision Cutter, whose non-dulling, ceramic blade and slender pen shape cuts down the klunky, dangerous exacto-knife to its awkward size. - E.H
