RIM does a good job with nomenclature. Whereas other phone creators simply ape themselves, following a logical line of numbers or a common thematic thread, BlackBerry and RIM take descriptive monosyllables to a new level (incidentally, that was surely a research study at some point). Following Pearl, Curve, and Bold comes the company's latest: Storm.

Aesthetically, Storm doesn't stray too far from the BlackBerry paradigm. It's black, brick-ish, and sleek. However, Storm embraces the touch revolution with its SurePress touch screen. A 480 x 360 pixel display provides stunning hand-bound views and encourages ample finger pressing.

Naturally state of the art, Storm capabilities include Bluetooth, internet browsing, video recording, video and music players, wireless accessibility, and countless other mobile amenities.

Furthermore, it runs on GSM, has 15 days of battery life, and built-in GPS. So if you and Peterman have to head to Myanmar (it will always be Burma to him) on short notice, you'll be okay. Also, its USB readiness makes flirtation with laptops and PCs easy.

Aside from the most modern applications and features, Storm has that revered RIM reliability, and if it's alliteration friendly you know it's good.

    Scott,

Have you actually used this puppy, or are you just coughing up the marketing documents you've read? The unit is complete garbage. Whilst the phone part might be stable, the rest of this unit does not live up to RIMs normal standings. All my US friends have returned theirs and gone back to either their Pearl's or Bolds. I had a chance to use one in NYC a few days ago and was shocked at how poorly it worked. The interface is slow to respond. Depending on which way you hold it, the QWERTY keyboard has a different configuration. Sometimes it is QWERTY, and sometimes it is Suretype. It feels like they rushed it to market to compete with the iPhone. All they've proven is that Apple knows how to do touch interfaces, and they don't. They should stick with their standard units, 'cause this one is a storm that you want to avoid.

Actually, other than the keyboard (I'm a recent iPhone expat), I found the phone to be quite serviceable. Light, small and, once you figure out the cryptic configurations, it is a competitive entry to the entry.

Inaccurate statement. The Storm doesn' run on a GSM network, i.e. Rogers, only CDMA networks such as Telus, who will be first to market in Canada, and Bell.

Actually the Storm (9530) has BOTH GSM and CDMA capabilities! There are two version to the Storm - the 9500 and a 9530. The "CDMA" version they are releasing now will have the capability to run on GSM networks. If you remember the 8800 (The World Phone), has both CDMA and GSM abilities. RIM takes it's time with these things - only to perfect them later!

    US/Verizon Blackberry 9530 Storm:
    3G EV-DO Rev. A/CDMA, 2100Mhz UMTS/HSPA and quad-band EDGE/GPRS/GSM

    Vodafone Europe/Asia Blackberry 9500 Storm:
    Quad-band EDGE/GPRS/GSM, 2100 UMTS/HSDPA

Mike is right about the interface and about the unit being rushed, BUT like every electronic device in this world that's a first gen - it will suck! RIM hasn't let us down yet and i'm pretty sure they know what they are doing. This phone has the ability to go a long way but the coding needs some time.

In its present form, the Storm is an ablolute disaster. An acquaintance of mine got one before Chrismas and had to threaten legal action to get his provider to take back the unit. His take is that, unless you have never owned or even operated a cell phone, the incredibly numerous and major defficiencies of this unit will drive you creazy... and maybe even think to revert to smoke signals!

I have this phone, and I'm fairly happy with it. I do wish it was a bit smaller though, although that's probably because I've only had small flip phones since the late 90s.
It does freeze occasionally, and subsequently needs to be restarted, but this sort of works out well since I'm one of those people who never turns off their phone and these restarts are the only opportunity the phone has to update itself.
Browser, reception, calendar, bluetooth, touch screen are all good in my opinion.
