The music of choice is dub reggae and they attract a predominantly twentysomething crowd. Magpie may not be for everyone, but that might be the intention. The staff is very friendly and eager to accommodate. This is a good spot for two reasons: a) if you’re a songwriter and you’d like to perform but suffer from stage fright; this is a perfect place to test the waters. Ten people will feel like an audience. b) If you want to grab a drink and have a little comfort food without any fuss, this place will suffice. It’ll be interesting to see how this place evolves. - J.B.

that previous review is pretty severe. firstly, not everywhere in toronto provides snobby, poor service. that's just ridiculous. secondly, though ive just heard that it is, i've never looked at magpie as a restuarant. ive never eaten there so i cant speak for that. for the most part, i think magpie is a bar -- and not one with waiters. if you want a drink, walk up to the bar! ive been there several times and the bartender/ess has always been really nice. the music is great on the weekends too - live djs - though sometimes too loud. i live in the neighbourhood and it's one of my favourite places to step out for a drink.

I can't actually write a proper review of the food since we were ignored and never received menus. We went on a Friday night and it was empty except for a lone patron sitting at the bar. We walked in and took a table and then waited, and waited and waited. The bartender looked over at us several times but simply continued to lazily chat with the guy sitting at the bar. We had no idea if we were in a restaurant (we had heard good things) or a self serve bar. It became so ridiculously obvious that the chump behind the bar was refusing to come over to us and there wasn't a waiter or waitress to be seen so after 10 uncomfortable minutes we finally left knowing less about the place then when we walked in. Typical Toronto night out. Magpie seems to exist soley so that the staff can come in, pop in a their new favourite cd and chat with their friends who seem to be the only people who receive service. Fuck Magpie!

Opening night was great! Fabulous music, great people and a lot of laughs. Very impressive atmosphere and fantastic hosts. I will be spending much more of my time and money at this venue. Looking forward to it!
