"Now if I'd known they'd line up just to see him/I'd've taken all my money and bought me a museum" – Steve Martin, "King Tut".
When Steve Martin sang these iconic words, he was referring to the late 70's King Tut phenomenon, spawned by the first ever "blockbuster" museum exhibition. Showcasing artifacts from the legendary Egyptian king's tomb (including the mummified king himself), the original traveling display drew curious tourists from all over the world, including 800,000 to Toronto's AGO in 1979 (the best-attended show in the gallery's 109 year history). Now thirty years later and one major Frank Gehry makeover later, the AGO is hoping lightning can strike twice. This exhibition should help recover some of the money spent on the renovation, cement the museum's status as a world-class destination, and hopefully bring upwards of 1,000,000 visitors. The king is back. - R.T.
Tickets range from $16.50 to $32.50.
