Location: 782 Queen Street East, Toronto, Ontario
able 17 is the brother from another mother of Izakaya, the former upper-scale Japanese resto. After the owners closed their baby for good, they knew they had to do something different; Izakaya's owner, Erik Joyal and a new partner, John Dawson, decided that creating something new with a hint of homage to the past would be an even better route to take.
While the spirit of the new Table 17 is Italian, Spanish and French cuisine - much different from the Izakaya shared plates - the owners have such a special place in their hearts for their now-closed Izakaya, that they have sentimentally brought back an Izakaya customers' fave: the famous Chili Beef Ribs.
Other than that, the European bistro is far from Izakaya in every way. Since the menu rotates with the seasons and according to the best produce available, the menu is short with four appetizers and five mains. Best bets include the Hot Balls ($5-$9), which is a large appetizer meant to be shared, served three flavours: Arancino, which is cheese and rosemary stuffed risotto balls with tomato sauce; Goat Cheese, with Ontario wildflower honey and Brandade, with salt cod and potato with basil puree. Polenta is a hit not just because it is a unique and rare dish, but also because of the way it is presented: soft and creamy, topped with a sauce and served family-style on a wooden slab. This is a place where everyone will know your name. Now Open. -M.K.
