Those of us familiar with the tucked away, charming surprise that is Baldwin Street, also know of John's Italian Caffe, a stalwart on the strip, responsible in large part for the street's downplayed revitalization. Founded in 1981 John's Italian Caffe, though itself a classical Italian restaurant, maintains the charm of what was formerly a predominantly Jewish neighborhood -- the archaic Hebrew script on the front windows somehow has become characteristic of the pizza/pasta joint.
Although historicity is a large part of John's success, even the steadfast at some point have to grow. So, John's Italian Caffe is moving into another neighbourhood – the annex. The new Bathurst location, just south of Dupont, might aid places like Grapefrut Moon and Scoop and Beanin renewing the life of that particularly dusty stretch of Bathurst.
Either way, the simplicity of the cuisine is an intelligent fit for the annex neighborhood and I imagine, in true annex fashion, it will be welcomed with open arms…and mouths. – E.H
