Don't be befuddled if the salesman at iRepair.ca doesn't bother to lift his head from working on a pile of broken iPods while attending to your inquiries; there's barely enough room to move in this 250 square foot store, so he can hear you just fine.
Matt Bremner's tiny iRepair.ca, at 494 College St. and Palmerston Boulevard, gets most of its business from the Web, but this little location thrives in repairing and selling new and used iPods. Sensing there was a market in refurbishing rather than replacing the devices, the Toronto businessman started his tiny store in July. A typical repair cost is about $80.00, and if you drop by the store, your repair can be done while you wait. Bremner, who fixes between 200 and 400 iPods a month, does a good "repair-by-mail" biz, which is done and processed for shipping the day of arrival.
While Bremner and his friend Jordan Stacey man the decks in the small shop, firms that previously fixed other computer parts have also entered the industry, and iPod repairs now make up the majority of their business. Analysts and repair-shop managers said the industry is growing because iPods are easy to break and tough to repair. Since iPod's maker, Apple Computer, is reluctant to repair broken players, this was open business to whoever wanted it.
iPods look sleek and work well, but don't hold up to a lot of damage. Since iPods are a sophisticated piece of electronic equipment that people will assume will last a long time, people are lining up to pay the repair charges. iRepair.ca also sells iPods and accessories, like the aluminum Nano Case ($24.99), iPod Metal Deluxe Case and iPod Video Aluminum Case ($29.99).
