ritish expat Andrew Buckler has been designing trendy and distinguished menswear out of New York for a number of years. There is a definitive look about his clothes, but the message is confused. The seem to say, "I don't care/I really care/I'm too cool to be seen out in public and I know it," all at the same time.
Up until recently, Buckler has been selling his designs (described as English bloke meets New York) in showrooms in New York (the Meatpacking District and SoHo), and London (in Spitalfields). And now, apparently, Toronto has been deemed cool enough to have their own Buckler showroom.
At the Fall 2008 show, skinny pants were just falling off the lithe model's hips, finished with cable knit sweaters torn just so. If you ignore the fur vests, metallic leather pants, and jumpsuits (?), there are some very wearable, hipster pieces here. (Stay tuned for the bowtie, sure to be a big trend of the season.)
The space will also provide more interest to the Queen West scene; skylights, beveled wood edges, and black wallpaper all provide accents to the illuminated white cabinets. Just like the clothes, the space is full of eccentric undertones on classic silhouettes.
Buckler's cool credentials include dressing the likes of The Strokes, Shia LaBeouf, Panic at the Disco, and The Rolling Stones. And with both Steve Buscemi and Steve McQueen serving as role models for the designer, you know you're in for an eclectic look. –C.S.
