A hero to those who like a little modern retro, Fred Perry has landed at a new outpost at Queen and Ossington.

Fred Perry, the three-time Wimbledon tennis champion - who always played in buckskin tennis shoes and would change into a fresh white shirt and pair of trousers every time a game made it to the fourth match - was totally accepting of the fact that he was more well-known for his clothing brand than for winning Wimbledon three times. He started off by inventing the antiperspirant wrist-band and went on to expand his line into a full on sportswear collection.

People even began to call his shirts 'The Fred.' The thing about Fred Perry's clothes was that they were both stylish and logical. Designed for comfort and longevity as much as they were made to look good, 'The Fred' just worked. Even JFK and the Queen Mother were spotted wearing his clothes, and thus began his legacy in the fashion world.

You’ve probably heard of Fred’s clothes and may have even bought some Lacoste as the next best thing. The brand has been huge in the U.K. since it began its legacy and we have yearned for it from afar. Last Saturday March 8th the first Fred Perry store on Canadian soil opened up at Ossington and Queen. You can’t miss the new store because in front of the huge wreath logo plastered on the window there sits a parked canary yellow Vespa. The Vespa fits right in with the waspy, designer tennis gear that is Fred Perry’s style.

Plaid is on everything in variations of black, red, pink, blue and green. Collared shirts and tailored pants prevail for men. There is also a wide selection of quality sneakers, windbreakers, belts, sweater vests and preppy zip-ups. This is the ideal store for the clean-cut jock kind of guy.

On the ladies side there is much of the same only substituting the tailored pants for pleated tennis skirts and short shorts. Cute little dresses and lacquered ballet flats are also available.

The wonderful thing about Fred Perry is that everything in the store matches. You would have to have your head under a rock not to walk out of Fred’s with a complete ensemble that could be worn three different ways for separate occasions.

His clothes have been accepted by everyone from 'rude boys' to blue musicians, and his clothing remains as relevant to the fashion world today as it did back when it first came out - you won't find much black here. –J.T.
