urniture stores are taking extreme measures to ensure they’re seen as a hot, chic spot for your decorating needs. For example, Toronto’s newest addition, Avenue Road, is located on Booth Avenue. Clearly Avenue Road sounds much more classy, which is why the deceptive moniker.
Not only is the name ritzy, the store also has a luxurious feel. Designed by Yabu Pushelberg, you’ll wish your living room looked exactly like Avenue (minus the price tags on everything). One of the most interesting features is a gigantic Hollywood Squares-ish wall, separating office space. You remember that show, right? The one where celebrities lie and try to trick you? I still wonder why it was so popular. Must’ve been Whoopi.
Avenue Road is a combination of international designers that are typically unavailable in Canada. The owner, Stephan Weishaupt, utilizes these designers by creating showpieces that are movable themes. This means that the next time you visit, the display will typically be something different, as opposed to a permanent set-up.
The furniture are all pieces that are original and artistic. The main goal is to recreate an art gallery feel with individual and unique elements. Beware that furniture this original and exclusive doesn’t go for cheap. Love that cubist free floating chair? Check the price before committing to it- a chair could easily run around 1,300. A piece. If you’re looking to add a few conversation starters to your home, then relax. One expensive sofa most likely won’t have you sleeping on it- just put the credit card down after you do real damage. -S.B.
