ith a high contingent of students, professors, and other intelligencia, the Annex has never had a shortage of e-conscious forward thinkers. Thus, it’s fitting that the neighbourhood has recently welcomed an environmentally-friendly coffee store which is also an embryonic café (i.e. it’s not a café yet, but will one day be).
Located at the south east corner of Bloor and Bathurst, directly across the street from Honest Ed’s (and, incidentally, Lettieri), The Green Beanery opened its doors in a space that time forgot.
An extension of the hugely popular website, the GB supports a variety of lefty-friendly causes and its proceeds go to Probe International, a charitable organization that monitors Canadian trade and aims to ensure just social and environmental practices. Is all this altruism making you thirsty for coffee? It should be.
Like its online incarnation, the Green Beanery shop sells a variety of beans and bean paraphernalia (i.e. grinders, coffee makers). Plans to enter into non-profit café realm (it’s definitely a niche) are underway. Look for onsite coffee, baked goods, and, possibly, gelato in the coming month or so. -S.T.
