Ultra Supper Club
Looking for the chic-ster community? Then Ultra Supper Club is the place for you. On any given night, tables give way to dancing at this hyperactive Queen Street S-Club (7?). Hand-picked, veteran waiters (there’s a waiting list for applicants) maintain the restaurant's service standards while providing a visual link to current cool; the staff is outfitted in Hugo, replacing the style every three months. The trick to any dinner/dancing night is to not over-stuff yourself; sluggish and bloated is no way to spend the second half of your Ultra evening when the dining room has transformed into an all-out nightclub. High fashion, dancing, and food all in one convenient location. What more could you possibly want? – J.R.

Vertical
Vertical’s spacious, wood-floored main dining room feels contemporary but not aggressively so, with shiny surfaces, warm woods and big wrap-around windows. With seating for 70, the space is dominated by plush seating and rich colours. Chef Vito Clemente, who first came to prominence as sous chef at Zucca Trattoria, exhibits enough skill and exerts enough charm to stand out in Vertical’s sizable crowd. And yet has drawn up a dinner menu that reads a tad formulaic, making some concessions to the unadventurous. However, the emphasis is on seasonal selections, which get the full treatment on the menu. In an upshot, there’s something unexpected about Vertical. It’s in the design, the odd location, and the hush. It took me two visits to relax among it all, even enjoy it for its strangeness. This, maybe, is how a place becomes a place. - R.L.
