The Media Club: Generally, this part-time live music venue houses small acts and has a rep for being one of those places where the word independent is embraced and beloved. The space is large enough for a party, small enough to feel quaint, and unobtrusive enough in design to allow its guests to be the wall art for it.
Glowbal: Already an actor wanna-be-seen haven for the cash flowing friendly,
Glowbal is the swankiest of places on this list for a party, and gives the opportunity for filmmakers to mingle in some semblance of privacy…wait for it…yup, BACK bar. Sure, it’s not a basement, but Glowbal wouldn’t stoop for a downstairs anyway. This is a place to see-and-be-seen, and even the back lit pink hued bar can’t hide industry types who want to be hidden. More expensive than our other haunts and tucked into the heart of ever-so-trendy Yaletown, Glowbal will likely attract the filmmakers of the less independent variety, with the less independent paycheck.
Vancouver Hotel/Sutton Place Lounge: Because these two monsterhouses may bed some of the filmmakers, it’s likely that it will also be a producer/director haven of sorts. While after parties at the hotels themselves will be of the gala variety that you’re not invited to, there’s not stopping you from lounging in the, well, lounge and waiting for the ultra cool, who are not into the rigid party atmosphere, to spill in for a beverage or two. While the Sutton is my favorite of the two spots (home to many a wall adorned antelope and quaint enough to give you an exclusive vibe, not to mention close enough to make you feel like you really are rubbing elbows) it’s likely that either hotel will have a noteworthy guest list…Just be sure you know who you’re looking for…
Remember, in conversation: be mannered, compliment as need be, get in, and get out. No one likes a hanger on, unless they’ve been invited. And you don’t have a ticket…
