For serious cinephiles, the
Toronto International Film Festival is practically a religious holiday, a high-minded celebration of serious artistic achievement and the spirit of cinema. But anyone who has ever been around Toronto during festival season knows that the film festival is as much about the glitz and glamour of celebrity as it is about films themselves. Or, at least, that tends to be what gets most of the attention. Hence, at the same time as TIFF announced its full program, which includes 335 films from 64 countries, it also announced its celebrity guest list. And guess which one we're reporting on? (Don't worry; we'll have a full preview of the films coming up in the next few days).
Some big names will be gracing the city with their presence this year, and for some their appearances themselves are likely to overshadow the movies that they are there to promote. Such is the case with
George Clooney, who always seems to top the list of stars at TIFF. The mega-celeb will be on hand for both his mustachioed role in
The Men Who Stare At Goats and his starring turn in Canadian
Jason Reitman's
Up In The Air, but let's face it, that won't be why there will be estrogen surrounding the Cloon on the red carpet and wherever else he shows up in Toronto.

Arguably even bigger than Clooney (in stature, grow up) is
Oprah Winfrey, who has joined up with actor-director
Tyler Perry to promote
Precious: Based on the Novel "Push" by Sapphire. Oprah is undeniably one of the most powerful people in show business, and her every action at TIFF is sure to be disseminated by the media and imitated by her fans.
As usual,
Matt Damon will be making the trip to Toronto for his annual
One X One gala, always one of the most star-studded events at TIFF. Another familiar face is renowned Canadian director
Atom Egoyan, who always seems to premiere his films at the Toronto festival, but this year he will be delivering a master class to young filmmakers. Following in a similar vein, both
Chris Rock and
Michael Caine will be in town for their films, but will share their experiences in the industry as part of TIFF's ticketed (meaning open to the general public)
Mavericks Series.
Drew Barrymore makes her premiere as a director at this year's film festival, with her odd roller derby dramedy
Whip It, and you'd better believe she'll be gracing the red carpet. She's also brought along the stars of the film,
Ellen Page,
Juliette Lewis,
Marcia Gay Harden, and
Eve. The
Coen Brothers will also be around for the world premiere of their latest comedic opus,
A Serious Man, as will
Werner Herzog for his own premiere.
For the sake of brevity, here’s a rapid-fire list of a few others that will be in town for the fest:
Mariah Carey, Bill Murray, Snoop Dogg, Keanu Reeves, Natalie Portman, Colin Farrell, Jennifer Garner, Danny DeVito, Clive Owen, Hugh Hefner, Jack White, Cillian Murphy, Demi Moore, Kevin Spacey, Michael Cera, Penélope Cruz, Ricky Gervais, Megan Fox, Penelope Cruz, Rob Lowe, and Woody Harrelson.
So get out your autograph book and secure a good spot outside Sassafraz or Hemingways, because celebrities will be crawling all over the streets of T.O.. And there might even be some movie screenings.
