oor (well) hobos are going to have trouble sleeping on Saturday, September 29th: Scotiabank Nuit Blanche returns. Last year's event saw fog photography, socio-political ice sculptures, DJ-ed pool parties, public napping, surreptitious yawns, ample coffee consumption, homeless insomnia/record profits, and serendipitous discoveries aplenty. With nearly 500 000 revelers/meanderers, the inaugural incarnation inspired ample nocturnal egg consumption and cultural enlightenment.
Begun in Paris in 2002, Nuit Blanche (White Night) expanded to Toronto in '06, experiencing huge success despite the rain. This year it will feature projects from over 500 artists in 195 venues, separated into three convenient zones (A, B, and C) that span from St. Clair to the lake and Jarvis to Roncesvalles (i.e. everywhere). Red Bull sales will skyrocket.
The sheer size of NB can prove daunting, so utilize your OCD planning; or just wander listlessly; either will work. Highlights include Craig Walsh's
Incursion which transforms the Great Hall's front window into an aquarium, replete with giant fish projections; a carpeted road at CAMH care of Walter Willems; Michael Bartosik's glowing dome in Trinity Bellwoods; Jesse Ewles and Todd Julie's Yorkville-based
Secular Confession Booth (about time); a Church Street red light district; and Parkour at the Dufferin bridge. But, it's hard to go wrong with Peter Griffin-sized options, so roam open mindedly (or visit
Scotiabank Nuit Blanche).
To accommodate the peripatetic hordes of urbane art appreciators, the TTC will offer non-stop subway service in the downtown core (St. George to Eglinton, Christie to Broadview), additional streetcars, and numerous hub-to-hub shuttle buses. Get a metropass.
With an epic Saturday night ahead of you, sleep well beforehand, drink plenty of fluids, and score a bucket of Fun Dip, but beware the euphoric effects of sugar and art. Exhibitions begin at sunset (7:03pm) and conclude at sunrise. Expect massive breakfast joint lineups and heated debates about pointillism. -S.T.
