Cohen and Ferrell could make a potential comedy dream-team on this project. While both actors are certainly veering dangerously close to over-exposure (particularly Ferrell), there is no denying the talent of either comedian. Both performers have even excelled as a comedy duo before, sharing a number of excellent scenes together in 2006’s
Talladega Nights. They certainly have the ability to pull off characters this iconic, but the movie simply won’t work without an interesting screenplay. Yes, bumbling detectives are funny, but we only need to look at Steve Martin’s recent
Pink Panther remake to see that the concept can just as easily provoke a violent vomit of disgust as it can laughter. Fortunately, the project already has that aspect covered.
In addition to the superstar casting there is a very strong writing team in place for this Sherlock update. The main creative force in the writing room will be Etan Cohen (sadly not Ethan Coen of the Coen Bros. or Sacha’s brother), an unassuming comedy talent who has written for
Beavis And Butt-Head,
King Of The Hill, the brilliantly titled short film
My Wife Is Retarded, and the upcoming Ben Stiller summer comedy
Tropic Thunder. He’s a man whose comic pedigree is assured and just in case something goes wrong on his end, there’s another comedic superstar working behind the scenes.
