Damn - that was quick! Design-heavy Toronto restaurant Madras Pantry (877 Queen St W.) opened up its alluring doors this summer, doling out signature rolled dosas to the local masses. Seemed like things were rolling along smoothly, with chairs filled and the space humming along sufficiently. But now, four months later, all there is to Madras Pantry is a papered-up store-front.
Signage on the door (see below) indicates non-payment of rent, and that the restaurant has been padlocked due to owners “abandoning the premises.” The four-month old hip dosa café, brought forth by Hanif Harji and Ryan Fisher, certainly had a fun décor ( seen here ) which featured the likes of hanging tube lights, hand-painted sword eaters, a wall devoted to Indian spices and original artwork (by Marlo Onilla, of Fuel/Biography Inc. ). But, if you’re out looking for a rolled dosa, you might want to try plan B (but not Indus Junction; it’s gone too).

I worked at Madras Pantry from the open, and the first comment above is not true. Ryan Fisher found me a new job after he told me that we were closing because the rent was being raised in January, and paid me everything I was owed.
They were always nice and honest.
It's too bad the place closed, we were always working on making the food better but I don't think people understood dosas. Nice try.

I worked in that place. I did the food, and Ryan Fisher and Hanif Harji did not pay me my last cheque. Ryan Fisher and Hanif Harji are both swindleres.

In all honesty, I've never cared for the dosas here. Basically, it was like eating 2 pounds of mashed potatoes.

I myself am very surprised. It was one of the better takeout options in the city...mix between burrito boys and subway, but cooler and tastier than both combined. Ahh well....
