Has Peter Jackson Gone Mad With Power?

In the fall of 2007, Peter Jackson began production on a cinematic adaptation of Alice Sebold’s novel The Lovely Bones. Ryan Gosling was hired to play the lead role and came to the project after giving two spectacular and odd performances in Half Nelson and Lars And The Real Girl. It seemed like a strong potential collaboration between two major Hollywood talents. But unexpectedly, Gosling was fired from production a mere two days before filming was about to begin. Mark Wahlberg filled in the role almost immediately, but the decision still cast a worrying shadow of the production. “Creative differences” were once again cited as the cause of the problem, which suggested the possibility of on set quarrelling .
Things seemed to go fine after that until last week, when production was shut down entirely after Jackson had—you guessed it—“creative differences” with his art director about how to depict heaven in the movie. This is a pretty odd time in the production to be having such major conflicts. Heaven is one of the main locations in the film, so if Jackson and his art director are unable to come to terms with such a basic element of the design, then it sounds like the seemingly easygoing director is having some pretty major problems working with his collaborators.
