For years, students have been taught to enjoy theatre "because it's good for you."
The Toronto Fringe Festival takes that principle and bludgeons it to death with zany antics, bizarre conceits, often blatant amateurism, anything:
The Musical, and occasionally, pure brilliance. The festival is uncensored and unjuried, so it's a very mixed bag. And we love it that way. With over 150 productions at venues around town, both conventional and unconventional, you never know whether you're going to see the next smash hit or something a few friends put together after a night of drunken bullshitting. Taking your chances is part of the fun, and word of mouth is key. If you need a suggestion for tonight (July 3), I'd definitely say
Jurassic Park at the
Bloor Cinema. Yes, it's just a screening of
Jurassic Park but it's performed with a live "shadow cast", musical accompaniment, and crowd participation a la
Rocky Horror Picture Show.
The Toronto Fringe Festival runs until July 12 at various venues throughout Toronto.
