overs of modern design will soon be able to revel in haute furniture and decor at very economical prices. Design Within Reach has brought mid-century modern classics by famed designers – like Eames, Saarinen, Mies and Bertoia – to more and more design fanatics who crave authenticity but detest the difficulty in finding original pieces. DWR sells fully-licensed models of clean, minimal furniture and décor. In case you’re wondering, “fully licensed” means that the products are the real thing and are manufactured by the company who holds the license to the original products. The bottom line is that you’re not purchasing a cheap replica that has been produced without authorization – everything is truly authentic.
One of the caveats of high-end furniture stores is the stodgy atmosphere that often accompanies them. While free espresso shots and a gallery-like atmosphere are welcome, holier-than-thou sales people definitely are not. Thankfully, at DWR studios the atmosphere is welcoming and encourages you to touch and test products as they wish. Staff members – in their refreshingly polite demeanour – are knowledgeable and lack an ounce of elitism.
Until recently, DWR studios were only located in the U.S. With ambitions to expand internationally, DWR listened to customer feedback and noticed the strong demand for their products from citizens in Toronto, a city they see as a cosmopolitan town just slightly north of the border. The expansive 4,700-square-foot store is located in a heritage building on trendy King Street, where many of the city’s luxury furniture stores are situated. With exposed brick walls and high ceilings, the large store (opening February 23) has an abundance of goods to help you get your Bauhaus on.
Sure, you may be able to get mod knock offs at places like Ikea but the differences in the quality of craftsmanship between their products and those at DWR is visibly noticeable to even the most amateur buyer. And while DWR isn’t a bargain basement, it is extremely well valued for what you are getting. Finally, a store where modernity in design echoes the philosophies its forefathers were adamant about – aesthetically pleasing, well-crafted and accessible to those with an eye for design.
