he 8th annual edition of the Calgary International Film Festival rears its head again, and soon the time will be upon us to entertain ourselves silly and watch so many movies that we can only speak in film quotes. When you’re through partaking in your indie dysfunctional family drama or right before your late night j-horror cult flick, you may feel the need to indulge in a libation or two. Or, perhaps a snack may tickle your fancy.
Unfortunately, attaining that ever-so-elusive opening/closing night gala ticket for an optimal opportunity to rub shoulders with Don McKellar or Deepa Mehta is more difficult than winning big in the Lotto 649. That’s where this particular piece of “edutainment” comes in. Aside from where the galas are being held, Martiniboys has searched out the eateries, watering holes, and hang outs that will find you among CIFF’s movers and shakers.
Belgo Brasserie
Another Penny Lane Entertainment Group creation, Belgo is a chic, upscale, French restaurant in the heart of the film and entertainment district. Hardwood floors and red leather adorn the open concept vibe of this posh eatery. Belgian and French food followed by a Belgian or French movie? This year’s CIFF lineup just happens to have flicks from both countries on the menu. Done and done.
Blink Supper Club
The dynamic duo of eats
and beats is in full effect in the Town of Cow with the recent opening of Blink Supper Club. So, if you want to make that duo a ménage a trois by adding movie-watching to the mix, who am I to stop you? Have your supper. Go watch a movie. Come back and do the watusi. See if I care.
Chicago Chophouse
Start saving up now so that you can afford the pricey yet succulent Canada Prime dry aged beef served at this upscale cantina just down the street from the Uptown. Featuring one heck of a wine selection too (3500 wines by the bottle and 26 by the glass), the Chicago Chophouse is positively ethereal for those who can afford it. Everyone else can come hang out with me at Murph’s (see below).
Garage
Here’s your chance to hustle up some coin like you’re Paul Newman. Practice your jump shot with a round of 8 ball and enjoy a cold one before your show at this sports bar and billiard hall.
Globefish Sushi
A short drive from Kensington is this raw fish peddling resto that is always jammed to the rafters. It’s no wonder. Their menu features a whole shwack of Izakaya, but to be blunt, everything they serve is mouth-watering. No reservations, though, so get ready to live by the motto of film industry workers: hurry up and wait.
