    Buzz: Two New Cafes

Meanwhile, further north on the pedestrianized Harbord Street, the spot of a dingy diner with a recognizable Pepsi sign has just been transformed into a sleek little café. Israeli expats Daniel Cohen (formerly a software engineer) and Eldad Jungreis (who also runs the hummus and pesto distributor Sunflower Kitchens), have opened Wild Thing.

Each of the owners has their own passions for coffee and gelato respectively. Sandwiches, such as the brie, apple, and garlic, served with greens ($6.50),

Banana ice cream shouldn't be yellow.

are a good snack option, but what we're really there for are the homemade gelatos ($2.75), made with seasonal ingredients. Pineapple and basil is refreshing in this age of global warming; while the apple, raisin, and cinnamon tastes just like homemade apple pie. Like Greenavi, just about everything is organic, or wholesome in some manner. As Cohen stated, "Banana ice cream shouldn't be yellow." Other notable flavours include tea infused chocolate, and orange rind and chocolate. (Seriously, we can't stop raving about this stuff.)

The coffee currently served is also 49th Parallel. Cohen had originally wanted an organic roast, but his discerning tastes couldn't find one he approved of. Never a tea drinker, he was taken aback by the interesting flavours of the Tea in the Sahara tea that they serve.

The place is incredibly casual and frequented by neighborhood and young professional types. The chilled out vibe permeates the place so much, that people have forgotten to pay. (Or so they say.) Indeed, Wild Thing makes everything groovy.

First impression, both places are cool, comfortable. I'd go back. At Greenavi Cafe, there is a lot of seats, seating arrangements. Coffee, didn't try it, got steamed soy milk, a bran muffin - the folks working, no attitude.

I had an espresso machiato and a pesto sandwich there for $11. The pesto sandwich barely had any substance to it, which would've been fine for $4...not $7.50 or however much it was.
