y North American standards, Toronto has increasingly become a first-rate sushi town. Fish-fans can choose practically any two-block stretch and get a selection of fine (and some not so fine) sushi spots. Some of the best are still long-time contenders (i.e. Kaiseki-Sakura, Nami, and Hiro) while other little spots tend to come and go. Yuzu, a just-opened venture on Adelaide Street has entered the sushi race; while it doesn't quite reach the upper echelon, it is an ambitious entry to the scene.
Curiously located at the end of the club-land strip, Yuzu may not look enticing from the street, but when you walk in the door you know it's the real deal. Endearingly, cheerful, hard-working staff scurry by with platters of colourful raw things. The décor is basic prescription sushi house: simple, airy, suffused with uncluttered table settings, and accented by a polished wood bar. The kind adjective is "bland," though others might counter with "cramped." One way or another, this restaurant somehow manages to fit a well-drewsed crowd into a long and narrow space. It's a true small-budget treasure.
The food ranges from straightforward udon chow to surprisingly good sushi plates. The Sunomono Salad ($3.50) is crabmeat and long harusame clear nodles (great tasting if hard to chopstick) with a light dressing. The Wakame seaweed salad ($4.99) is tossed with sesame oil, soy sauce, and sesame seeds. Other starters include four or five sushi sampling plates and tempura shrimp dishes. There's nothing fancy about the tempura; it's just vegetables in a light tempura batter. What sets Yuzu's version apart isn't the quality of the ingredients, which is excellent, but the sheer size of the dishes. If you finish an entire order, congratulate yourself.
Moving on to the sushi-house litmus test: maki. A single roll ranges in price from $4 for the meaty avocado option to $14 for the more exotic lobster-tail version and is meant to be ordered as an entrée. With generously overstuffed slices delivered with a small side salad, you won't need much more.
The Negi Sake Maki has slices of sashimi-grade salmon spiced on one edge and supplemented with green onion; it's pretty bland, despite the spice, and it's difficult to pick up, even with a fork. The Salmon shin maki fared much better. Served raw, this salmon is even texturally richer than some tuna. The Spider Maki ($12) has the usual beautiful soft shell crab texture with avocado.

12 Reader Reviews | I checked out this restaurant about a month ago when I was in the area. The food portions were huge and the food was fresh and tasty. The service was impeccable and the waitresses were always attentive. I would definitely recommend this place! It's location is a little hidden though so be sure to keep your eyes open.

the staff are warm and friendly and the sushi is to die for.
one taste and you will be back for more.
i will certainly tell all my friends about it and will certainly hold a party in their large party room upstairs.

The sushi and sashimi dishes are extraordinary. The staff are warm and attentive. One of the chefs behind the sleek sushi bar (who also doubles as Toronto's only sake sommelier) is always game to make the perfect drink to suit the occassion. I won't hesitate to entertain both personal and business collegues alike at this wonderful and unassuming gem of a Japanese eatery.

The sushi is awesome, really, really fresh fish. I also had a spicy tuna handroll, which was really yummy. The Japanese bartender made us a delicious cocktail with sake, crushed yellow kiwi and the eponymous yuzu. The staff is really nice, very attentive. I will definitely be back and would highly recommend!

I went to Yuzu for a business lunch while I was in Toronto and it was great! I will definitely go back next time I'm in town. Highly recommend the house sushi! While it's not a cheap lunch, it's certainly reasonable.

Great little place! Just need to get the word out about it though, as the restaurant is in a weird area.

I sat down, looked at the food and was waiting for a shotgun of satisfaction get blown into my taste bud at point blank... but I was robbed instead. The wait was a problem because the place is small, excited to get seated and get some bomb ass sushi rolls that martiniboys.com here was chatting about. I was a bit disappointed, maybe it's cause I'm not a regular? Perhaps it seems like all the regulars love this place, I was hoping to feel the same... but I can't put my heart into it if I wasn't in love. Sigh... Maybe we'll try it again someday.

Cute spot. There's a few kinks to work out, but other than the weird location Yuzu earns three much-deserved stars.

Ok, I will begin by admitting that I don't sushi. But the old man loves it (if I let him eat sushi at every meal, he'd be in heaven), so for the sake of a harmonious marriage, I endure. He loves the spicy tuna roll and the sashimi at Yuzu. I am a huge udon fan, and the udon here is fantastic. Very flavourful, with carrots, enoki mushrooms, chicken, and cabbage. Decor is plain, but it's worth a try.
