I n the former Republik space, XS Nightclub has moved in on Richmond Street. Republik was your run-of-the-mill Toronto clubland haunt: big, gaudy, and full of half-dressed club kids, many of whom travelled by limo from Scarborough and Mississauga. But, like many clubs in the area, it has also had its problems, both from neighbourhood residents and Johnny Law. The club's license was suspended a number of times before it finally shuttered for good. Megaclubs like Republik weren't meant to last anyway.
The switch from Republik to XS involved a full scale renovation and somewhat-clever rebranding, but they've hardly rewritten the book on downtown Toronto clubs. The 14,000 square foot club features all the opulent (or gaudy, depending on your opinion) design elements that you've come to expect: swanky chandeliers, draped fabrics, a huge dance floor, and sectioned off VIP areas. It's the kind of thing that will annoy most Pitchfork Generation indie kids, but will strike joy into the hearts of all those that revere nightlife in large proportions.
The club features a four night rotation of events, from the university-centric "Wild Thursdays" to "Full Service Fridays" and "XS-essive Saturdays" (that name is a bit redundant), live-to-air club nights feautirng a mix of club anthems, hip hop, house, and mashups. Every Sunday, the space will give over to industry nights. Get your limo ready, and get ready to arrive in style.

2 Reader Reviews | Awesome club, after renovations, club has become a whole new experience, overlooking balcony in a more private vip section, two rooms music's good, crowd was great. Alright priced drinks and fairly good rotation of events.

Awful. My friend and I were wandering downtown one night and somehow stumbled into clubland (with the help of a one too many martinis) and were pleasantly surprised to see one place with a lineup that wasn't halfway in front of another bar in the blistering cold. However, once we entered the line, we saw girls who were clearly underage and probably not on guest list/VIP (if this shithole even has either) walk in almost immediately. Upon entering this smelly dungeon of a club, we found it to be basically empty. The dance floor had all of 12 people shaking their whatsits to old, tired hip-pop anthems. All of said patrons were also either sleazy greaseballs or underdressed, underaged, underexercised pieces of trash. We stayed for all of 10 minutes, just enough time to take one shot of tequila and get the hell out of there.
