You can always count on Kensington Market for a night of dining on-the-cheap. In places from Big Fat Burrito and Jumbo Empanadas to Rice Bar and Torito Tapas Bar, easy-to-please spots are the signature core. So strong that core is, that restaurateurs have rarely ventured into these parts with a project with offerings that reach beyond, say, the price of a burrito. La Palette is one success story that comes to mind.

And now, Waterfalls Tapas Baris is giving it a shot with a menu of stylized Indian cuisine offerings. Shyly, however, as the menu sneaks in a few tempting, if slightly generic, Mediterranean offerings for the masses.

While Waterfalls is not exactly formulaic, the very idea of it first showed up on the local radar late last year when word got around that a restaurant was taking over the old controversial XPACE gallery space. After bad publicity killed off the gallery, much curiosity surrounded the restaurant construction site. And now, after six months of construction and permit acquiring, here it is.

The Kensington Market spot is not as flashy as some of the newer Indian restaurants about town, nor does its menu break new ground. But it executes the standard Indian dishes well, though pretty heavy on the traditional Indian curry spices. Small plates include a little plate of Cajun-seared scallops with a pomegranate glaze ($9.99) and served on a little arugula salad; with the jumbo shrimp ($9.99), Til Tikka prawns are sautéed with Indian spices; and escargot ($9.99) is doused with a serious garlic butter. But the real standout is the chicken tikka ($8.99). Plump, boneless chicken – first marinated in yogurt and then baked in a clay oven - is served with naan bread and tamarind chutney.

The mains are evenly split between Indian and contemporary. Grilled New Zealand lamb chops ($19.99) luxuriate in a red wine rosemary reduction. Order them rare as the kitchen tends to over-do. Still, the center of the chop is ideally tender, moist and pink while the marinade outside is cooked into a juicy cloak. The scant flesh running the length of chop is transformed into charred lamb candy. The lamb, like the other Indian dishes, is accompanied by fragrant, fluffy and nicely cooked basmati rice.

Best naan in Toronto bar none!

I am indian and this has some of the best indian food I have ever tasted, GREAT butter chicken, AMAZING naan (esp the garlic naan), other than that we also tried the okra, paneer tikka masala and an array of cocktails all of which were made promptly and tasted brilliant. On busy nights the service falls a little slow but the jazz band on Friday's is a good way to kill time. Unusual location and decor but excellent food.

The food here is absolutely delicious and inexpensive. And along with the suberb customer service and appealing ambiance, it is definately one of the best restaurants in Kensington and Toronto alike. Not to mention, they make a kick-ass mojito :)
I definately recommend this restaurant to Indian food lovers and those looking to try it for the first time. You will not be disappointed!

I have been invited to the Waterfalls Indian tapas bar by my friends for a venue, at 303 Augusta avenue, downtown. The place is very clean and the food, atmosphere, candle lights, customer service are at top notch.Prices are very reasonable.Friday nights live jazz is complimentary which is a good thought for the Kensington market. We had a very good time, and for sure, we will book our future parties at the Waterfalls Indian tapas bar and grill.A job well done.

I have eaten butter chicken in all other Indian restaurant in Toronto. But Waterfalls makes the best. Also try their Indian style mussels and no one has this kind of flavourful sauce, also Indian style calamari is a good adition to the menu.Naan is very fresh from the tandoor oven, and their beer on tap selection is excellent and reasonably priced.

too bad the City is taking so long to get a liquor license on the patio ... not fair to the new restaurants trying to make it on a summer opening ... no problem here though you will love the food .. excellent spicing, presentation, and size portions ... we had the soup of the day and a couple of tapas .. will take my girlfriend back for her bday this week as I was looking for a new spot ... service is overly keen but who can complain about that ... a must for Indian lovers this chef has it right .. he even took the time on a Sunday to come out to the patio to check on things ... no where but up here ... congrats

I ordered the veal special and was not happy with the side dish. I made a request to have something instead and was told "we don't do that". When I complained to the manager, I was told that is our policy. As it turns out the manager was the owner.

    Very poor customer service!!!

    I will not go back!

Curious about the location for this type of restaurant. But, I do agree, it's a great restaurant.

I went last night after passing by many times during construction. It was last around 930, for a glass of wine and a bite to eat. My meal was served promptly, everthing was fresh including the pasta. The atmosphere was relaxing and service was great. After chatting with the owner he even served us up a complimentry sample of what we can expect on the patio this summer. Waterfalls has raised the bar in Kensington and is definitally worth checking out.

    Delish!

Curiously, A few of us popped in on Sunday. We were on our way to a College Street restaurant.... and I saw that it was open. Not bad. Like the article says, it hasn't made up its mind whether to be Indian or a contemportary menu. Nonetheless, we all ordered Indian fare... and not bad. But it needs a bit of time to work out the kinks.
