  • Vertical Restaurant and Bar

The current aesthetic of Toronto restaurant design suggests that a certain number of its architects might spend more than a little time perusing Dwell Magazine. Many interiors resonate with dark woods, leather and iron that surfaces oozing water. Vertical, on the mezzanine level of the First Canadian Place, takes a page from a different book, cleverly disguised as the kind of place where one might see co-workers consorting with supermodels.

The spacious, wood-floored main dining room feels contemporary but not aggressively so, with shiny surfaces, warm woods and big wrap-around windows. With seating for 70, the space is dominated by plush seating and rich colours. Two private dining rooms are glassed in, and a separate lounge features a 40-foot sandstone bar top.

Chef Vito Clemente, who first came to prominence as sous chef at Zucca Trattoria, exhibits enough skill and exerts enough charm to stand out in Vertical’s sizable crowd. And yet has drawn up a dinner menu that reads a tad formulaic, making some concessions to the unadventurous. However, the emphasis is on seasonal selections, getting full treatment on the menu.

Appetizers include a ubiquitous pairing of bosc pears and shaved parmigiano in a radicchio salad ($12). Under the heading of pasta there are, for good and safe measure, a black & white seafood ravioli ($13), and main courses dutifully encompass braised lamb shank ($24), poached grouper ($22) and a Sicilian steak ($32).

The black-cod fritters with raisons and pine nuts remain a solid starter, with the added dose of red onion salsa. The pasta dishes include a few unusually clever and satisfying ones, in appetizer and entrée portions. As good as the appetizers are, don't rush the entrées, especially the seared Ahi Tuna loin and served with a tame caponata. ($30); you get an unusually large section, delivering firm texture and striking sea taste.

The sheer # of closures of these cookie cutter miami-LA-style resto lounges should prove that Torontonians can only handle a few $16 martini's being served by VERY pretentious staff.

Just went there Friday night and must say everything was very disappointing especially the service!!! I went there there for one of those fastlife venues, so every so often the men would get switched around to all the tables. The waiter, Rick, was very attentive to the men and totally ignored the women at my table - never got to order the wine! Also, he mixed up my appetizer - I ended up getting someboday's else's appetizer! My friend had to ask him 3 times to bring a glass of water. The worst was when he brought our bills and demanded payment from my friend immediately and even rudely insulted her by saying ' hurry up and pay - I'm not going to pay for your dinner!" I told him he was rude and at first he was argumentive but later he apologized. The food wasn't much better either - the grouper was very salty and the portions were really tiny. For the prices they're charging you can get much better food and better service at other upscale restaurnats in Toronto! (Though I wouldn't call this place upscale) Will never go there again!

The food is superb...especially the pasta?seriously it?s amazing! They also have a great wine list and I found the d?cor funky and welcoming?I don?t know about you but there is something about the color red that just makes me want to eat. I?ve been to the restaurant 3 times now, which I don?t think is a lot, but already the hostess remembers me and I like that. Honestly, I would never have guessed that such a cool and trendy place was hidden away in a food court in the First Canadian Place?it?s a great find. I just can?t wait until they open their patio!!!

The service and food stands out from the other bay street restaurants. Great atmosphere and service. The sicilian steak was brilliant. I would definitely return.

There is something special about this restaurant and it might start from it being located in a place where its not expected. It looks like the patio is still under contruction but will be the meeting place for a beer after work.
I have been twice to Vertical and havent been disappointed with either the service or the food and will be back.

not a seenster by any stretch and you think of yourself as somewhat of a foodie - the staff at vertical will tend to treat you well. word to the wise - never snap your fingers at the service staff - you will only be sneared at further. my experience at vertical was good when compaired to the person who had his meal (accidentally) dumped on his lap by a socially responsible server ( remember to keep your hands to yourself boys and everything will be fine )
all in all the food was well prepaired, the service was prompt and informative as to possible pairings, and the ambiance was somewhat smarmy - but that has more to do with the suits than the surroundings. vertical will surely be the next hangout for ubercool grownups with corporate accounts
