o it sounds like an oxymoron. But whenever one of Martin Streek’s hooky hardcore golden classics come on the jukebox at Sunday’s Spirit of the Edge live-to-air at Velvet Underground, more than a few of the patrons look up from their Labatts Blue pints to nod approval of yet another golden ‘80s tune.
Velvet Underground has drastically changed its tune, but Sunday night's eighties' sound is a contender. - B.J. |

DO NOT COATCHECK AT THE VELVET UNDERGROUND!
I don't mind Velvet Underground for what it is...a dingy rock club. I've only been there twice, and both times I've had an issue with their coat check.
FIRST TIME - My boyfriend kindly checked my jacket for me, paid for it and held on to the stub. At the end of the evening, he went to get my jacket and they wouldn't give it to him. On top of it, they called all of their bouncers down to inspect the situation. There was no issue here. He had the stub, and checked the jacket himself. About 20 stressful minutes later, they gave him the jacket and we were on our way.
SECOND TIME - This time my boyfriend checked his own jacket. At the end of the night he went to get it, and was told "Oh...we gave that jacket away". Could you imagine?? Apparently, one of the regulars NEEDED a jacket and one of the bouncers insisted that she take HIS winter jacket. On top of it, he had the keys to his apartment amongst other things in his pockets. All they could do was offer him free drinks in exchange for what they had done. There is NO excuse for this!!
SO - Moral of the story!
If you are going to visit this ding bar - don't trust their coat check!

There is nothing velveteen about the underground, unless you count the couch with the giant assspot that you quite literally lose yourself in close to the entrance.
Dimly lit with a couple of pooltables close to the front, this is a place to get your drink on. Domestic bottles are only 3$ or is it 2.50$ before 10PM.
The crowd is a mixy mix of 20 somethings who mosh and dance about after 12AM.
My favorite thing to do here is watch a regular pool playing master who has young things swoon over him (he is the rooster of the Underground).
A good time is guaranteed if you submit to the debauchery that is the underground.
