hey throb en masse to anonymous '80's tunes, trying to exorcise the high-school misery from all that luxuriant flesh, while old folks are forced to retreat downstairs to Al Fresco’s, sadly. Very sadly. You might be jealous if you had the energy.
Welcome to Up. This is the newest installment from the owners of Al Fresco’s, and they are spearheading this loft/lounge spot for the very young. Which is precisely what they got.
Up has been the late-night place for college students and recent grads for precisely one week, as it quietly opened its doors last spring. Once the after-work party peters out and the keg is kicked, younger folk flock to this John Street spot looking to finish off the evening with their 7th, 8th or 10th drink of the night and to dance the night away to old '80s favorites. The main bar, with windows facing the street, is lined with mirrored beer ads and framed posters, making it as familiar as the college dorm rooms at U of T.
The room is a barren warehouse apartment feel. The bar is u-shaped around a center wall, which the well-stocked bar follows. Ample seating is divided between bar stools and tables along the walls. Puffy furniture, moved against the wall makes room for dancing, is stationed near the rear of the room.
