hen you enter Unit for the first time, it may take a minute to grasp what's going on. With an interior adorned with found-object art, Unit has boldly – if not incongruously – packaged itself as a "Snackbar," in a rapidly gentrifying area.
Sandwiched between the Gladstone Hotel and The Drake, and dangerously close to the West Side Lofts project, "UNIT" has little in common with its current neighbourhood brethren. Attempting to recapture the true art ethos of Queen West, Unit features artful touches of Parkdale nostalgia, with old movie sign letters and a vintage roulette wheel where a clock might normally be. And take a close look at that bar counter. Yes, that is indeed wood from an eighty-year-old gym floor.
No other bar in town packs as much over-the-top playfulness and urban eclecticism into so narrow a space. Even with no TV screens (a standard for this area), the sensory overload approaches the dizzyingly surreal vision of its creative owner, Matt Beckerlee. Unit overflows with neon, polished surfaces, techno-noise and hyperactivity among servers and patrons alike. Late night, the room makes way for a revolving door of a crowd who keep the place going until close.
This address itself has housed myriad businesses, from a print-making shop to a 1900's railroad junction drinking spot. Even the wrought iron sign spelling out "UNIT" is reminiscent of train tracks and harkens back to simpler times. One can almost envision old-time railway workers knocking back pints in this place.

The other reviewers need to get their heads checked. This bar's reputation is overinflated like the people that frequent this place. The bar is way too narrow and small. The seating is non-existent and the people think they're cool cause they're hanging out at a non-mainstream spot for the area. The only problem is those people are quite fake and have very little connection to real life. The only bright spot to the night were the attentive staff and ok music. Do yourself a favour, go to the Gladstone instead or better yet, find another spot besides W Queen W to hang out at. Too many style fakers and very few style makers!

I love UNIT. It's just the sweet hangout I was looking for. Be sure to make a pit stop while you're there. The bathrooms are really swell. Not a swank place but lots of character and I don't mean the kind of "character" that a seedy bar might have. Eclectic and refreshing!

Gorgeous space!!! Just what Queen Street needs. Loved the interior, the vibe and staff were friendly. I think I've found my new local spot! It's very NEW YORK!

This place is what the nieghbourhood needs!!
an extremely inviting atmoshphere, with a complete lack of pretense. NO frou frou here. The Deco was definitely interesting - right down to the vintage chairs, The Barfridge and even the bartop.
The music was great! Drinks were very well priced. We will definitely be heading back.

frank did you even bother to read faye's review? if so why were u expecting a lush lounge? here is a snippet of her article; she makes it quite clear that the decor isn't "lush":
"There isn't anything "expensive" about SYP Lounge. The hand-painted sign that hangs off the door, the dropped ceiling reminsiscent of the dingiest basement, and the mirrored panels that line a relatively small space to "trick the eye" into thinking it's bigger, are of no importance to the crowd that flocks to these parties"
great review faye

Went there on a Saturday night, paid a cover charge to get in to find the people inside looking like the only thing that was keeping them was the amount of money they'd paid to get in and the hope that things would improve. Music was great - that I admit. But, from the martiniboys.com review, i suppose I was expecting lush lounge, but it was very DIY. Will try again.
