  • Ultra Supper Club

Looking for the chic-ster community? Then Ultra Supper Club is the place for you. On any given night, tables give way to dancing at this hyperactive Queen Street S-Club (remember them?). Though certain factions still lament the loss of Bamboo, Ultra has made the space its own. Where else can you fine-dine and dance without wearing a tuxedo? (Shhh, that was rhetorical.)

Ask any Lotus (New York) or Time (Montreal) veteran and they will testify that one of the toughest concepts to execute is the dance-club/restaurant combo. If anyone is up for that task, however, it’s the team that has brought us Ultra Supperclub. Two seasoned gurus of the nightclub and restaurant worlds have set out to dazzle with this double-duty destination. With the opening of Ultra, an elegant jewel had just been added to Toronto nightlife's crown.

Due to some brilliant design work, columns rise, through open spaces, to a height of two stories. Those drapings aren't mosquito nets, but ‘privacy’ curtains enclosing ‘pods’, whose folds create the illusion of grooves like those on the columns of a Roman temple.

Munge//leung: design associates have divided the space into two areas: a lounge and a dining room, both of which eventually meet when Ultra’s dining section transforms into a dance area. The full-height drapery pods straddle the centre of the space while informal dining tables are adjacently arranged to accommodate up to 100 diners. Six booths with pin-stripe fabric banquettes sit on a raised stage-like platform that overlooks the whole dining area.

The brick walls and iron and glass chandeliers give the club a vaguely industrial feeling, but those sheer curtains, along with the low-slung couches, soften things nicely. At the back, an additional ottoman-dotted lounge area awaits those seeking gastro-respite in the company of snappily chic bartenders and waitresses that can pull of terms of faux-endearment (sexy, baby, etc.).

I rolled into this place expecting an upscale, fashionable, quality environment where I could hear some good tunes and grab a decent drink in the company of suave young professionals. Not too much to ask, wouldn't you say?

How wrong I was ... while I had no problems at the door, and found security laid back, as soon as I got into the main room I was shocked at how outwardly trashy the place was. The clientele didn't give off even the faintest whiff of sophistication, and the bar service had the rushed, clueless feel of the worst Richmond St. clubs. One bartender seemed totally confused when I asked for a glass of wine, and what I was offered was frankly garbage. Any points they were trying to score on the upscale/quality front were lost in a quick fashion.

The DJ they had knew his stuff, but the track selection was very generic top 40 and sadly fit the trash atmosphere. Drunks wandered around the place at not even 10 PM on a Friday, approaching me with put-on attitude that crumbled quickly when I didn't play their games.

Needless to say, I pulled the eject handle on this joint after one drink. Whatever it is that Ultra is shooting for, they truly seem to be missing the mark.

Went to Ultra just the other night for Summerlicious. After reading these reviews I was hestitant to say the least.

    HOWEVER.

The experience was wonderful. I was leery about the time limit (1.5 hours, apparently) but the service was so efficient and professional that we finished our dinner quickly and were able to go up to the patio to have a drink.

The food literally made me swoon. The tuna sashimi and sesame popcorn was textured and savoury, the beef entree was one of the most tender cuts I've ever eaten and was on a bed of the creamiest risotto, and the bubulubu chocolate/marshmallow dessert was really rich and fudgy. The waiters and waitresses were young and hip and efficient, and the atmosphere was buzzing.

The patio afterwards was nice - a mixed crowd, to say the least, and a little too old for my liking. However, the bartenders were warm and attentive, and the view was to die.

All in all, a really pleasant experience. I'm glad I didn't listen to nay-sayers.

I have frequented Ultra many of times and really enjoyed but my last visit this past Saturday for my Birthday was enjoyable but started off very very disappointing.

Confirmed bottle service with Brenda on the Wednesday 10-12 people, when we arrived she gave me 4 free tickets for people to get in. There were 12 of us all ladies in total and we had to pay $160 dollar for cover. I have done bottle service many of times in Toronto and most clubs cover at least 8-10 people I realized that they would most likely not cover everyone but for 12 people to cover 4 was horrible customer service. Then we arrive at the table and it is a 2 seated table for a couple on a date and maybe enough room to seat 4 people I then explain to Brenda I booked 10-12 people and actually had to bring out my Blackberry to show Brenda her response confirming my request and she was "oh sorry I made a mistake" with attitude. WE then expressed our concern that there was still not enough room for people to sit and she was very condescending saying something along the lines of "oh well there is never enough room for everyone to sit have you every done bottle service before" we realize BRENDA that you wont have enough room for 12 people to sit but I expect more then half of group SHOULD have a seat at the booth. I then told her I was just there on Monday night and 5 enough had enough room to sit she then looked at me and said "Sweetie that is a Monday night" again very patronizing. BRENDA we actually have done bottle service many of times in Toronto and Ultra is not consistent with many of the other places I have been heck even in Las Vegas they don't charge you cover when you book bottle service.
Then we waited about 20 minutes to even get a bottle and then ordered 2 bottles of champagne and were give dirty glasses and waited about an hour to get the champagne.
If it wasn't for my wonderful friends and the beautiful night not sure the night would have been as successful....Will not recommend bottle service at Ultra or beware and bring your conformation and booking incase BRENDA tries to tell you something else....

I just had my 21st birthday at Ultra and it was AMAZING! I had a great time, the servers were great, the Thursday specials superb and the atmosphere was fantastic. I will totally be back :-) This is exactly the kind of venue Toronto needs more of.

Just had dinner and stayed for the Madonna party last Friday nite. From start to finish everything was fantastic at Ultra. I had expected "attitude" like many Toronto clubs but once again...pleasantly surprised that my friend and I didn't get any "tude". A nice "hey doll" here for dinner? at 8:30 was warm and friendly and even waiting in the lounge for my friend was relaxed - no dirty looks or pressure to buy any drinks. The menu was great and diverse. Waiter was not so informative but instead of making things up he apologized and waved down someone more seasoned. No big deal. You need to have a decent attitude to get it in return! After dinner, the crowd swelled to make way for the much touted Madonna CD release party. This was totally fun! Yes, the CD is great (heard it about 5 times) then made way for other retro 80s then onto more current urban music. Everyone was having fun and we didn't experience any major attitude just damn good fun! The staff at the end of the nite (we left at 1:30 am) were still just as friendly. If you're into the nitelife (a la Vegas style) complete with great fine dining and awesome club scene...this is it! Ultra is by far the best place to be in Toronto. Costly yes. But again, if you want to "party like a rockstar" this would be it. Lots of pretty people and fancy cars!

Oh Ultra Supperclub, I never imagined you would be such an anticlimax!
Why all the cheese music? If I wanted to hear Bon Jovi and ACDC I would've headed to Devil's Martini for cheese top 40 anthems.

I had no problems with the bouncers, the service or getting my friends into the club - they were all nice to us. We all expected some tunes fitting of such an awesome space. We were hit with cheese everywhere. The crowd was full of 40somethings dressed in ill fitting denim, unfriendly suburbanites and lots of young trash.

Overall it was a disappointing experience. Looks like you're not the place for the urban 27-35 crowd anymore :( Yet still I'm crossing my fingers hoping for a comeback as the temperature rises...

    HORRIBLE!!!

My 9 girl friends and I had a reservation on Saturday night for 9pm. When we arrived we were told that our table was not ready and to wait in the lounge. We didn't mind and completely understand when reservations are a little behind. 20 minutes passed...then 30. Not once did the maitre d come to our party to explain the wait.

Ater 40 minutes we asked how much longer we were going to have to wait. We were told 10 minutes. 20 more minutes went by- again, with no visit from the front of house staff.

When we complained to the bartender- she went to speak to the manager. His solution? Offer us a bottle of proseco to split between NINE people. Value of proseco- $15.00 if that?

By this point we were getting a little angry to say the least. If it were not for the 2 lounge bartenders being so nice and trying to get us seated, we would have walked out by this point.

We were seated at 10:15. We sat at the table for another 10 minutes before the server arrived. Again when we tried to ask the maitre d (my friend was standing less than a foot in front of him, staring at him), he was more concerned with his cell phone than with an unhappy guest. When he did acknowledge her, it was with such general lack of concern we were appauled.

When the server finally came to our table, we got up and left.

Never have we ever experienced service this bad anywhere.

None of us will ever return to Ultra.

The bouncers are racist, not to mention absolutely repulsive. Did I read a comment where someone said they don't let people in based on appearance? The bouncers look like fat, old gorillas - who are they to be turning down anyone based on appearance. If their fat asses were on the outside trying to get in - they would not only be turned down, but banned from the premises. Fat bastids.

Don't waste your time on this place!
For any of the positives (very nice patio bar updatairs), the attitude displayed by the bouncers and the management makes for one terrible experience. Its is obvious they have had no formal training in PR and customer service and if they don't make changes they will be closing their doors soon.

You have options in Toronto - use them!

I went to Ultra this past Saturday night, to kick off my birthday celebrations. As we got to the door, the two fat bouncers were having an attitude problem. To tell you the truth, they were simply racist and rude. It's ironic that a club that boasts asian fusion judges people on the colour of their skin. We left because we couldn't be bothered with bouncers who are getting paid $8/hr and hating their lives, so we went to PUR supperclub and had such a good time. I would not recommend Ultra, as it is prejudiced and a shame to be a Canadian establishment.

We at dinner with 2 other couples during 2007 Summerlicious. Service was virtually non-existent - which I guess is better than too pushy servers. The four of us arrived just after the first couple. They already had their cocktails. We waited about 15 minutes before we could order, and then because they wanted another seating (our's was at 7:00) we had to order our cocktails and food at the same time. Water was not refilled, in fact, I think we may have seen our waiter once after he took our order.
Food and presentation was exceptional, but it is partly about the service, and they failed considerably.
We went upstairs to their ultra cool patio and service failed again. Too bad, I would have liked to go back, but not with this service and their regular prices...there are way too many good restaurants that have great food and great service to waste your time with this one. Thumbs down!

Where do I begin...you spend a good portion of the night trying to get in, unless you know the big dude out front eating popsicles, classy! Once you manage to get in, you end up having to pay a $20 cover to WAIT IN LINE AGAIN, unless you want to stay downstairs where theres a whole of 10 people partying. The fact that they charge a premium to wait in line is just ludacris and results in the fact that I'll never go there again, just out of principle. I've been before, and its half-decent once your in, but when your dealing with crooks and pricks, as these guys are, it gives me no incentive to come back. The only way I'd recommend this place is if you are a shallow individual who needs to be surrounded by other shallow people who can walk around saying "we got into Ultra last night."

I've just finished reading a review, that completely bashes The Ultra Supper club.

I had dinner there, and found the exact opposite. Our seat was not ready when we arrived, but instead of them rushing the others out, we were treated to a cocktail on the house. I'm not sure if this is standard, but it was a nice bonus right off the bat! Our seat was great. The meal was superb! Our server couldn't do enough for us, and did not rush us in any way. At the end of the meal they started up the dancefloor, and we decided to stay for the entertainment. The music was great. I think Ultra Supper Club is cutting edge.

You go to a resturaunt because you want to eat. This is the kind of place you can go, and spend your whole night at, not just dinner.

I highly recommend The Ultra Supper Club! If your not affraid to spend some money, and have an open mind to a new aptmosphere. You'll have a great time!

I had dinner at Ultra Supper Club on Saturday, January 27, 2007. I was there as part of Winterlicious so judge my comments, as you desire.

Taking into account that I was there as part of Winterlicious my expectations were slightly lower than if I were paying “full” price. Even with my lowered expectations I was disappointed. I’m going to make some comments on the following aspects of the evening, Food, Service, and Décor.

    ********** My Menu **********

    * Spinach egg drop soup, Kobe beef wonton, enoki mushrooms, Reggiano
    * Braised lamb shank, saffron risotto, Swiss chard, roast garlic, marjoram
    * Apple tart tatin, vanilla ice cream.

    ********** FOOD **********

Wine. A nice touch to the Winterlicious menu was two nice wines sold by the glass at a reasonable price.

The starter was average at best. The broth of the egg drop soup was nothing to write home about, the Kobe beef wontons were basically tasteless, nothing like I’ve come to expect from Kobe beef. The mushrooms were OK but very sparse. I give the dish a PAR, but the par putt just snuck in the side door.

When the main course arrived it was presented beautifully. The lamb shank was in what can best be described as an oval shaped bowl. The shank was placed on top of the risotto and Swiss chard, with a nice sauce. I’m generally not a fan of braised meats so I don’t have any eye opening comments, the shank was no better or worse than any other shank that I’ve eaten. The Risotto turned me off; it seemed to need about 10 more minutes of cooking before it was al dente. It was actually crunchy and gluey with out any hint of saffron. If something is called saffron risotto I’d expect to be able to identify some saffron in the dish or at least as a garnish. Double Bogey on the Risotto but I’ll give the main a BOGEY because the sauce was nice and the Swiss chard was also cooked nicely.

The dessert was the highlight of the evening (other than the company). The apple tart was very flavorful and I thoroughly enjoyed it. I bet it would have been better if I were offered coffee to accompany it. The dessert was a BIRDIE.

    ********** SERVICE **********

The service started off like a prizefighter. The front of the house staff were fabulous, we were greeted, as you would expect from a fine dining restaurant. That’s where the service peaked.

When we were seated our server was very aggressive and in no way set us at ease or prepared us for a great meal. I felt like I was inconveniencing our server every time I wanted to order or “not to order”. One member of our party was slightly delayed and our server suggested that we order without them. Lets not even talk about the pressure to drink the water (if we don’t drink the water I guess the mother ship wouldn’t accept us).

There is no doubt in my mind that we were pegged as 6 penny-pinchers out for a cheap meal. The funny thing is all of us enjoy good food and are willing to pay for it. We also enjoy fine wine and cocktails. If our server worked it well we would have easily spent another $100 and of course that means a bigger tip.

When we were finally rushed through our meal and finished, in what I can only assume was plenty of time for the next seating, we were abandoned. Our “in your face” server who was at the table 5 times trying to get us to order was nowhere to be found. We couldn’t get the bill.

I had decided that I wouldn’t be visiting Ultra Supper Club for a second meal about 15 minutes after I had arrived, our server sealed the deal when it was suggested that we had to be out the door in 2 hours and we should order without the sixth member of our party. The food would have had to be spectacular to change my mind.

The Service gets a TRIPLE BOGEY. It would have been an “Other” but friendly, helpful staff greeted us so that saved the service team a stroke.

    ********** DÉCOR **********

The décor was not my style but the place looked good. It appears to me that they are going after the “trendy” crowd and not the “foodie” crowd. Décor gets a PAR.

    ********** Overall **********

To keep with the golf theme the whole experience was 3 over par even though the place got strokes due to it being a Winterlicious special (which is not that good). Ultra Supper Club did not make the cut and won’t be playing for prize money on the weekend.

    1 out of 4 Stars.

Went there for Winterlicious last week.

What a bunch of nincompoops working there. Especially whoever the guy with the stupid hat at the front door was. GET OFF YOUR CELL PHONE YOU POSER!

They are rude. Service is terrible. And to top it off, I got food poisioning.

I will NEVER go back nor will anyone I've told about this experience. And to the dork at the front door (I think he told me he was the manager -- you will only be "cool" for so long -- you are a sorry sad man).

I went to Ultra not because it was my choice, but because we were a group of 16 and the birthday boy wanted to go there. I read the reviews and was expecting the worst. What I found instead was a beautiful space that was suprisingly good. The bar/lounge server was definitely aloof and cold, but she brought us what we ordered and fairly quickly, so hard to complain about that. After an hour of mingling with our group in the lounge, we went to our table which was beautifully laid out with printed name tags at each spot. The service at the table was both friendly and competent and we wanted for nothing. We were on a prix fixe menu for $65 pp and there were a few choices in each category of app/entree/dessert. I had a very nice mixed green salad, followed by a filet mignon which was absolutely fantastic. Perfectly cooked and very tasty and tender. Dessert was a vanilla brule which was also good. The place is not cheap, the music is a little louder than most restaurants and the place turns into a club afterwards. For our group of 16, it was perfect. I would not likely return for dinner with only my wife and I, but I would love to go back for another group celebration. My birthday is in another month......hmmmmmmm. Sounds like a plan.

When you walk into a place like the Ultra SC you more or less know that you can expect a "you're so lucky to be sitting here, but I'm so much better than you because I get to work here" kind of attitude.

But that attitude is mixed with complete incompetence then you end up with a recommendation that can only be to avoid this place at all costs.

Aside from the fact that it took until halfway through the main course for the waiter to tell us that the wine we had asked for was out of stock, and that it was actually too dark to see what I was eating, I was also informed in the most ungracious of ways that "babysitting" the customers' belongings is not something they do at the Ultra SC.

The pickpockets that hang out at the Ultra must be good since no one at my table noticed when something was stolen, and the brusque, dismissive manner with which it was handled by the staff can only lead me to the conclusion that this sort of thing happens frequently.

    Ultra is completely useless.

I'm completely sick of these wannabe lounge/club/restaurant places downtown. As with everyone's comments, it's the staff. I find it is the same at Maro. The staff is a bunch of nobodies, the security is a bunch of nobodies, and they're treating the customers like crap. They're rude, ignorant, obnoxious and I hope people just give up on these places.

The people you're being asses to are paying your $10/hr salary. That's why you needed to stay in school. You're not fighting terrorists. You're outside in the cold, opening a rope in front of a door.

We over pay for the ridiculously tiny portions, wait in line when it's completely dead inside, show up for events that are always late, or never happen, the bouncers are pricks to everyone, we have to deal with the strawberry scent coming out of the ass of Maro's chef (taking his lead, after I finish this review, I should proclaim to be God of the Internet, and walk around like I sh*t berries), and all we get is this attitude like "you should be glad that we let you be here".
Your job is to take tickets at the door, and you have an attitude? Are you kidding? You take peoples tickets when they walk in the door. This is your job. You take tickets for a living. Forget attitude. You should be so humble that you're useless enough to be taking tickets.

Is my money no good? The people that keep these places open are the ones your treat like crap.

    If we all walked away...

There are much classier, more beautiful, much more upscale places to go, where you can be treated better.

Go to Flow, Proof, Flight 55... Better staff, Better food, Better atmosphere, and you get treated properly. Just soooo many better places.

Why do people go to Ultra to pretend it's Yorkville?

    Useless...

Well, I've seen quite a few things in my travels but this place wins top prize for 'will never go there again'. The staff completely missed the training seminar regarding SERVICE. And the doormen are horrendous --- I've never witnessed a woman being manhandled anywhere "upscale" in Montreal. Definitely avoid this place.

My date and I were invited guests for a fashion show at Ultra on friday October 20th; she works in fashion and I in PR. It was the most frustrating experience that I've had going out in some time. We try hard to be polite, conscientious and acommodating when we go to these things, but three different members of Ultra's staff were rude to us. at the top of the list is a young man named Michael who guards the door. If I were his employer I would have banged him like a gong for not only being rude but raising his voice to a lady.

I live smack in the middle of Yorkville and have never been treated so badly. For all the purported attitude and stuffiness, at the very least, I'm treated with a certain courtesy!

Ultra is beautiful (esp. the patio if you actually make it up there), and the atmosphere is amazing. BUT, most of the people are snobs and celebrity wannabes, especially the staff. The last time my girlfriends and I went for dinner (w/ reservations), we were told that we actually weren't on the list. They asked if we had phoned back to confirm our reservations with the hostess during the week. Here's a thought...WE DIDN'T BECAUSE IT'S NOT OUR JOB TO PHONE TO ENSURE THAT PEOPLE AT THE RESTAURANT ARE ACTUALLY DOING THEIR JOB AND CONFIRM OUR OWN RESERVATIONS!!!

We were made to wait at the bar for close to an hour. I kept checking back on our table and was informed at one point that they thought they had already sat us and didn't realize we were still waiting so they gave our table away!!! Apparently, the hostesses don't leave their post at the door and actually talk a walk around the dining room!!

When we were actually sat, it was by one of the owners who proceeded to throw the menus down on a make shift table that had been set up for us near the door to the kitchen. Our coats weren't taken to coat check for us (which is supposed to happen when being seated for dinner) and the wait staff kept bumping into our table and chairs because of our close proximity to the kitchen door. We received no explanation for the mix up, no apology and not even a smile from the owner herself.

I will think twice before going to Ultra again for anything! Ultra might not care if they ruffle a few of their patrons' feathers but the reality is that word of mouth spreads very quickly. I will make no attempt to hide my contempt of this place and Ultra should learn that once the trend has passed, once their set patrons'have gotten a lil' older and more mature, and once the next fantastic place opens, all they will have left is memories and their reputation. And to top it all off, the space where Ultra is now used to be the old Bamboo. What a disgrace!!

bouncers are the rudest and snobbiest I have ever seen. Been to this place a few times in the summer and the patio is nice but the music is non existent and the crowd is pretentious and boring. As for the winter, the place is too small to dance and the food is nothing special. Wont be going back for a LONG time maybe never, there are plenty of better places that are just as nice and upscale without all the attitude!

A couple of weeks ago some friends and I decided to try Ultra. We?d heard good things and were inspired to go by the evite we saw from Martiniboys. So we RSVP?d and went.

Upon arrival (at the early time of 10:20) we were asked to pay a $10 cover. I asked inquisitively ?Why? What was the value of RSVPing?? The doorman explained to me that ?usually Saturday nights are their BIG night, the line up is huge and by RSVPing this would allow you to bypass that. Friday?s aren?t as busy, and a line won't have for a bit so there is no value - have fun?. Fair enough response, we paid the cover and went into this lame venue. We were bored quite quickly and left.

On the Monday morning, I arrived at work with my Starbucks and discovered NEW email from Ultra dated from Friday evening. It stated that we had been put on the guestlist and this meant that we could by-pass any line up and pay NO cover. What jerks the staff are at Ultra. Definitely the worst club experience I?ve ever had in Toronto.

We attended a Sunday night wedding at Ultra and were blown away by the local, service and ambiance. It would be interesting to see if these components hold up when not attending a private function but on a club night out. We'll have to check it out!

In addition to the gorgeous room, the entertainment that was hired "Karen Manion Jazz" was absolutely amazing! Check her out at www.karenmanion.com! Smart move on Ultra's part!

The Complaints are for those left outside!

I must set the record straight. A place such as Ultra will never ask for your business, neither will it shed a tear to see you at the door for the better part of an hour. If anything, complaining about the place itself is a mere derivate of strapping on a sandwich board. However, if you are one of the select few who make it past the pearly gates, your night is destined to climb. As one ascends to the patio, a breaking Toronto skyline consumes the senses, which are then tantalized by an array of simplistic beauty. People are beautiful, the staff is gorgeous, and the atmosphere is nothing short of electric.

Don?t get me wrong though?this place is far from Eden, but it seems to cover up its weaknesses awfully well. All but one that is. When it comes to bang for your buck, I?d say you?d be lucky if you even got a whimper. It?s extortion! But if you stick with a smile, and play your cards right, you might just be able to take advantage of the fact that most of the people around you CAN afford to be there, and might even find interest in making you their act of charity for the evening.

In regards to getting in, I can only offer one simple piece of advice, make sure you have a reservation...not guest list, but a reservation for bottle service. I know it's an emerging concept here in Toronto, and bloody expensive at that, but it works, and it always will.

    Enjoy?

Even if you are on their guest list, you may not get in because of all the attitude you get at the door - it's not like this is NY! Overall, extremely unprofessional and disrespectful staff. Have been there three times (when I actually got in) and had major issues with the staff. Twice we've been moved from tables to accomodate other parties before we were finished eating. Had drinks spilled on us once. Another time, had to wait in line for 45 minutes even though we were on guest list. Have waited hours before being served. You know what they say: three strikes, and you're out!!! On a positive note, the food and drinks are quite good but pricey. The decor is fabulous and tastfully done.
