A newborn to the restaurant scene, Toko Bistro and Bar is looking to roll right into Toronto’s sushi community. Located on Yonge just north of Wellesley (much to gawk at while you graze), Toko takes over the old Toronto Hemp Company space, which means one thing – they’ve got a lot of space to deal with. But in the cutthroat restaurant industry, that space needs to be filled.

The main attraction, and really the first thing you notice when you walk in the door, is a 62-metre rotating conveyor belt, with a handful of sushi chefs smack dab in the middle. Grab a seat, become mesmerized by the consistent hum of the belt and watch the treats tread on by. In an unusual arrangement, Toko churns out little sushi plates in plain view of salivating diners. Sushi pizza? Spicy Maki? Some Shark Fin Nigiri, perhaps? The possibilities are endless. Simply take what grabs your attention. That's this eatery's buoyant moral.

No matter how sophisticated your internal sushi detector is, the eye is distracted by this huge conveyor belt of food. The rest of the design, sadly, is genericlly bland. Wall-Mart white fans stand in random corners. A Pepsi fridge is stuck behind the cash. A wide-screen TV takes up one wall. And the floor tiles scream Tim Horton’s.

Still, one can't deny the relatively healthy ambitions Toko has about sushi, and isn't without peripheral vision. Toko offers up a monstrous array of product for more of a top-of-the-line price. The sushi is well crafted, with a good shape and size but don’t expect anything extraordinary. And be careful of hidden cream cheese that seems to creep into rolls you wouldn’t normally expect it in (a la Rock ‘N Roll). But with that said, the selection is there with dishes ranging from your basics (California Roll) to your fancies (Ikura Nigiri) to your guilty pleasures (Tempura).

A neophyte sushi eater will be thrilled to the core, yet someone who has been around the global block will realize that these blocks have a lot to offer. Still, Toko got it right in terms of the presentation. Simple plates with cute-as-a-button Japanese designs are a great surprise. And forget about those ubiquitous wooden chopsticks – Toko takes it up a notch with a heavier, black chopstick ensuring a splinter-free experience.

I'm amazed this place is still open. Sub-par sushi is readily available in Yonge Street.

These people gave me food poisoning twice. My advice is to stay away.

Everything was fine until they brought out a tempura order we ordered a la carte and it came with 7-10 LIVE ANTS! it was horrible and disgusting. They have an ant problem and obviously did not use a clean serving dish for our food-hence ants. The fact that the server and kitchen didn't notice is even worse.

My husband and I are tired of the usual 'family restaurants' that we all know about. We walked north on Yonge from Front in search of a place to eat for dinner in addition to sightseeing. We bypassed a lot of places and when we got to Wellesley and found TOKO, we told ourselves, THIS IS IT!!! Even the kids got so excited. The place is kid-friendly. I have 2 kids, 10 and 4 and they both enjoyed the food and the place. Reasonably priced too. I don't usually write reviews but TOKO is worth recommending to everyone...

I would disagree about Toko being a sushi restuarant. The service was poor. I had a basket of tempura off the sushi bar, and it was not fresh and cold. I then proceeded to ask the waitress if I can order a plate of ebi and a plate of kani sushi. She proceeded to tell me that they are "maki rolls"; and they might not be able to make it. First, Ebi and Kani always come as sushi or sashimi and never as maki rolls. I would suggest that the waitress learn the Japanese menu before she comes back for another shift. A friend had the chicken teriyaki bento box, and the chicken was dry as a bone. I would have to say that this is not a favorite place, and I will not go back.

I ate at Toko last night... I would have to agree with the review and was quite content with the sushi round-up. I really enjoyed the experience here. You walk in, take a seat, order a drink if you like, relax and enjoy the little parade of treats.

I've been sampliing the various sushi spots in the area (yonge st; dundas to bloor) in search of the best within walking distance of my apartment (obviously, this is not an official survey- lol). So far, TOKO stands above the crowd for quality, presentation, value, and taste. This is the only one I've come back to. I'm almost embarrassed to say I am quickly becoming a regular. :)

I live a street over on Bay St. so I'm always heading over to Yonge & Bloor to eat out. I'm a big fan of asian cuisine so there are plenty of choices for me in the area. Always found decent quality Thai and Viet restaurants in the area, but even though there are several Japanese restaurants in the area that offer very affordable prices, never found any that did so without compromising on quality. Toko's a welcome addition to the neighbourhood because they seem to offer both. Dropped in for lunch yesterday and had the chicken teriyaki bento box-- very generous portions, good price. Place is upbeat with friendly service (some asian restaurants tend to neglect the service aspect). My friend ordered the Kamikaze roll off the regular menu and so I got to try a taste and loved it. Presentation was beautiful. Definitely plan on becoming a regular.

I had dinner at Toko a few days ago with a couple of friends. I'm from Vancouver, and they have the best sushi restaurants anywhere so I kind of have high expectations when it comes to sushi. (a little did-you-know? of the day here: there are more people who eat sushi in Vancouver than there are in Japan) I enjoy rotating sushi because you can just walk in and grab right away whatever looks good without having to wait for your order and you can also see the chefs making your food. In addition the food come in small portions so you can taste a little bit of everything... Before Toko opened, I thought it was going to be another disappointing place on Yonge, because rotating sushi places in Toronto seem to be overpriced for the quality of food they serve. However, I must say that I was quite impressed with the restaurant. Even though it was only the day after the opening, everything seemed to go smoothly... The quality of the food they serve is excellent (not amazing, but pretty darn great for the price...) with some amazing sushi, very creative rolls, a variety of desserts including japanese cheesecake and mochi... The price of the dishes are also very reasonable. Toko is a good place to go to alone or with a large group of people for great sushi without hurting your wallet... As for the atmosphere, it's very relaxed and casual, yet chic and modern... If you want to impress friends or want to try something new... or if you just want good food, I definitely recommend this place. I hope this helps...
