  • The Rushton

Like a fashion designer who wears only a black turtleneck and jeans, the exterior of the just-opened Rushton is deliberately antistyle. Sporting a simple brick façade and a bold, block letter sign, only the restaurant’s vast wrap-around windows hint at hidden riches. Only a visit allows a closer study of the juicy detail squeezed into this new resto-lounge.

Considering the handling of the exterior of what was previously the Di Maria Market, The Rushton’s interior is long removed from the original depictions of the long-standing fruit store: Frank Lloyd Wright-ish, rock-layered walls, hardwood floors and a large service bar now replace what was a drab room with aisles of produce. Heavy wooden chairs – some antique, some new, some gallery-ish – bare tables and the host station (a butcher block left behind from the original store) showcase archetypal touches that underline the room’s new geometrical motif.

In typical small-plate style, diners are encouraged to share, and plates emerge from the open kitchen as they’re ready. Appetizers aren't the typical calamari and bruschetta food-cost boosters. Instead, they skip that and go straight for the good stuff: a warm potato and spinach salad with healthy doses of caramelized onions and tomatoes. A bittersweet lettuce salad in a dressing of the fattest olive oil topped with the added touch of fresh Atlantic salmon (a less flavourful chicken is another option).

Entrées aren't the expected $23 salmon and $19 chicken quarter; in fact, most plates are offered at two sizes (who does that?). The steak frites, for example (at either $15 or $20) is an unadorned piece of strip steak, tended to be the least remarkable, while difficult dishes like the seared duck breast was very good. Or the Salmon Bake, a whiskey glazed Atlantic salmon served up with a jeweled wild rice salad, is also a good choice.

Wines are priced to drink, not to shock and awe. The whole shebang is served until 1:00 in the morning, so that you can lead your actual life - with your theater, gallery openings, or heaven forbid, kids or work crises that don't let you get out the door until 9:00 - and still have a life with foods of great aspiration and execution.

food is ok but ferros across the street is better. does not allow smoking outside on the patio-are y nuts-i will go to ferro who does-food is better. also i am in sales and i buy gift certificates for my clients-which one do i buy from-ferros. better food and an no up iditty atitude. abit snotty at the rushton and owner is up and down-one day he says hello and next day he does not. think he thinks he is better than everyone else. sorry ps: check out yannis east of rushton-cheaper and just as good food.

It's OK. A neighborhood joint. Parking on St clair.
I'd say order the steak salad or a burger. More complex foods are quite mediocre. Ambiance is not really child friendly.

Its a traditional Italian fare reincarnated at this cozy spot in St. Claire West. The food is flavourful and cheap. its affordable.

The only good thing here is the salmon...the owner is a little arrogant (sometimes he says hi and sometimes he doesn't look at you) and so are the staff. They placed the wrong order for one of my appetizer's and they looked at me as if it was my fault and that i had to eat it because it was already made!! I gave this place a chance 3 times with no luck.

I have been there once, eating at the bar and I think the bartender was quick and knowledgeable. She was courteous without knowing we were industry people and that is always a plus. The place was busy when we were there (on a Wed night) and Can't really comment on the servers in the dining room. I think the Rushton will be around for a while because it's fun and simple. Besides, I dare anyone that reviews this place poorly to try doing something like this on their own. The more self owned restaurants we have in our beautiful city the better. Cheers to the Rushton!!

What an arrogant bunch the serving staff and manager are, as if it's a privilege to get a seat at this noisy, pretentious place. The food is very average, and overpriced for what one receives. The neighbourhood was desperate for a joint with a bit of cachet, and this place seemed to fit the bill for residents who love to posture and preen. With the lousy attitude of the staff and the less-than-stellar food, it's just a matter of time before the village hipsters move on....

I've been there a few times, twice i dined at the bar which was fun for all the goings on. It is definately not for the lame, or cronic complainers who need to feel important. It has substance, a mixed crowd. Reminds me of going out in Chicago on a monday it's busy.!!
the fish fry is so tasty and i don't feel quilty indulging on the sweet potatoe fries. The staff was accommadating and interested. i'll be back to a brand new experience. ciao for now.

Great atmosphere, food was average, but the service was terrible. Bartender rude, and seems to think women don't deserve the same attention as men (maybe she is insecure!)Owner a little arrogant.Too bad could be a great place perhaps we needed to go to Ferro.

The Rushton has a great atmosphere. The food is not consistent, I have been there many times and understand that you will build a clientele with consistency. I would also like to see some more seafood dishes as well. The Rushton is still a restaurant in it's early stages of becoming a jewel on St. Clair.

Oh what has happened to the Rushton? Once great food has now turned barely adequate with overly greasy fries gracing the tough steak. I keep going back hoping that the food will go back to it's greatness of the early days but with no luck.

    Bye bye Rushton.

Went to The Rushton as it's in our neighbourhood and the Martiniboys review was favourable. We were expecting a quiet, simple but elegant atmosphere with decent food. It wasn't that way though -can't believe it's possible, but it is even noisier than Fero (across the street, same owners). Heard my neighbours more than my husband. The food was definitely not worth the prices (had the special which was not so 'special')and the service made us feel rushed with only our barest needs met. Would not recommend this restaurant which is too bad b/c it's a nice looking restaurant. St. Clair West needs some elegance.

The place looks great, but the food has yet to find its footing. The hamburger is great, but so far the other items have been lacking. The fries, one a highlight, have recently changed; they now remind me of McCain oven fries. I hope they are able to work out the issues because it has so much potential.

I have had nothing but great dining experiences at the Rushton. I would recommend it to anyone. The food is excellent, the service is excellent, the wine selection is excellent. I have ONE COMPLAINT which is my reason for writing this review. I am hoping that Mr. Pronesti or someone that works for him is charged with the task of checking online reviews from time to time because the dessert selection is terrible. I have been disappointed every time. I NEED CHOCOLATE at the end of a delicious meal like the ones I've had at the Rushton and the chocolate cake did not cut it. Suggestions: Chocolate Mousse - rich and creamy - perhaps milk and white chocolate? Chocolate Lava desserts- I know that lots of places do the lava cake these days but it's a real winner so why not have one on the menu? The other dessert that I had was the apple tart which was, again, disappointing. It tasted store bought and the crust was dry. SO, MY OVERALL RATING OF THE RUSHTON IS 4 STARS BUT WITH THE CAVEAT THAT THE DESSERT MENU NEEDS AN OVERHAUL!

Wanted to be impressed but was not by the Rushton.
The bartender made mistakes with the wine twice. And the martinis were adequate.
I ordered the potatoes and spinach salad for a main course and found it to be unremarkable. I asked a server about the source of the spinach and they never came back to me. Our main server did ask about the salad, and as I was giving my thoughts on it, he walked away saying they were always interested in feedback?.hmmm I am dubious.
It is a terribly loud environment. If you are across a table on a Saturday you can barely hear anything being said by your fellow dinners. So it was tiresome.
And I found the crowd a bit over styled, every man had the same haircut and a bit plastic and stretch on the ladies?.most likely would not go again. However to be fair, my fellow dinners I was with liked their meals. The salmon was cooked perfect and was tasty.

The Rushton thoroughly impressed every aspect of what I was looking for. The calamari was cooked to perfection and not overly bready. The lamb shank fell off of the bone and was simply excellent. There is a great selection of wine and the atmosphere is very warm. The open kitchen allows a great view of what is going on and every detail down to the music was superb. Will definately be going back and soon.

My wife and I have been wondering about this place since we saw the construction completed a few months back and, after seeing the interesting menu, decided to take the plunge. We shared a calamari appetizer, which was quite good, and each had a glass of a reasonable viognier. My wife had the steak frites and I the hamburger with caramelize shallot & roquefort. We shared a bottle of a red Cotes due Rhone (very mediocre). The serving portions were too large for the smallish plates for the mains, which makes cutting meat hazardous. The steak was a little overdone and, unforunately, the frites were swimming in a mushroom sauce which turned them from crispy to soggy. My burger was quite good, but did suffer from a dirty grill where the bitter charcoal taste from the grill grate sometimes overpowered the rare burger. We shared the caramel apple crumb tart for dessert, which tasted good but was a little doughy. In terms of atmosphere, the wood floor and tin panel ceiling do little to dampen the noise from the music and surrounding conversation (think Irish Embassy on Yonge). This can make Ferro seem low key. It was quite busy there, but this does not jibe with the impression of the Rushton as a mature Ferro. I think we will give it another try as our experience differs from other diners, but would encourage people to head a little further west and try the Regal Heights Bistro, which we rank higher for both food and atmosphere. It is a good comparison.

I went to the Rushton with a friend, hoping to impress...
The Rushton came through, in a big way.
The food was great, not one complaint.
I decided to try the Hamburger, and it was one of the best I ever had. Not to mention the fries, oooohhhh, you have to try the fries.
And as for the drinks, the Martini's are probably the best in the city. Overall, the entire experience was great.
