  • The Hideout

    Drew Rowsome
If Franz Ferdinand singer Alex Kapranos can pen a book on restaurants, Iggy Pop can demand fresh taramasalata on his rider, and Dave Grohl can freely admit to his love of “stinky cheese,” then perhaps a “rock n’ roll bar & eatery” isn't as ridiculous as it seems.

The Hideout attempts to be two things at once: 1) a showcase for local rock/blues bands and 2) a dining destination. The ambition is admirable and almost successful.

The lounge/bar area is certainly rock n’ roll, what with its comfortable black leather couches, a small stage, a giant plasma television broadcasting carnage, and a busy bar. The crowd varies, depending on the band playing, but consists mainly of people in bands, forming bands, formerly in bands or friends of the band. The vibe is friendly and the booze flows swiftly. Squeezing between the end of the bar and an abandoned upright piano one reaches the dining room tucked in the back. Tasteful black and white photographs of the rock n’ roll pantheon, Hendrix to Harry, stare down from the walls.

The main source of movement is pool playing and smoke sojourns. Since heroin-chic emaciation is as much a part of the rock star aesthetic as tattoos and black clothing, food sales are not apt to top bar sales.

However, both bartenders, without prompting, enthuse about the chef and menu. The food is well prepared and nicely presented but is, alas, not destination fare. With a Donegal Fisherman's Chowder ($8) billed as "market fresh fish and shellfish with a freshly baked cheddar scone," the menu emphasizes ingredients. A Triple Decker Club ($9) is composed of quality components and well executed, though it's still just glorified pub grub. The eager to please server apologizes that the fries will take a few minutes: the deep fryer has not been "fired up," as no one has ordered anything. The substituted salad, while healthy and crisp, is bland. Though not spectacular, the menu fills the requisite pre-pint/pre-performance sustenance need, despite not being a draw in and of itself. As the weather warms and the Hideout's expansive patio attracts a larger crowd, perhaps the busier kitchen will become more inventive. Already, the taro root nachos ($9) and Iranian flatbreads with white bean dip, hummus, and roasted red pepper ($8) are perfectly suited for al fresco dining and Queen West people watching.

Sorry Dudes... Food was amazing after waiting 2 hours... only enough menu's 4 one table & we had to wait until they were done until we could even get to order... then the bleach mop came out behind us and we had just started eating.... GROSS. Sorry, I really wanted it to be amazing... Oh- The server got our bill wrong because he was "too busy" doing shots behind the bar @ 9.30pm.

I went to the hideout with some buddies of mine for a birthday. It was a Friday and not really busy when we got there. The drinks are cheap and the place is comfortable. Things were going well and we were having a good time until it got a little busier. The bar was full but not busy and suddenly it took 10 minutes to get a drink! IT WASNT EVEN THAT BUSY! My buddies and I took care of the bartender but the favour wasnt returned once there were 10 people at the bar so we took a seat in the dining area expecting to get served by a server. We were wrong. No server and no service at the bar. I don't understand how things went from great to garbage in a matter of minutes. The bartender who started to serve us but then decided we weren't worth her time looked old and partied out which seems to be a common quality amongst the bartenders there. Only been there 4-5 times and won't be going back which sucks because I like the place but the service is too slow if you're not friends with someone there even if you tip well.

if you want to be irish for one night or several nights in a row the Good boys will take care of you from start to FINISH, these lads take care of you like its your fucking birthday everytime you walk through the door, so if you want great service and cold drinks, well if you want a warm beer i'm sure they could accomadate you as well by microwaving or purhaps boiling your beverage, they're good that way too; what you want is what you get, at the bar known as the hideout.

Just had dinner at The Hideout and LOVED everything about it. The food and service were great. I got to tell you I love the relaxing atmosphere and lack of pretense. After dinner we sat at the bar to finish our drinks and actually met a bartender who was both friendly and knowledgable. They band started playing and we ending up dancing the whole night! It's been a long time since I've been to a place that actually isn't trying to be so cool that you just end up feeling ripped off! I'll definetly be back guys, thanks for the memorable night. Keep doing what your doing, it works!

There should be a seperate catergory for "FUN TIMES" and the Hideout would get 5 stars hands down.
