Do your memories of the Guv involve glow sticks, various pills of an illegal nature, or a "post-bass bin exposure" ringing in the ears?

Since the rave scene peaked in Toronto, the Guvernment crowd transformed into a scene of Euro-clubbers expecting Ibiza partying standards and suburban out-of-towners looking to live it up for a wild night in the city (because their town has only 300 people and one stoplight).

Oddly enough, this random smattering of patrons did not kill the clubbing establishment, and the Guvernment has stuck around as somewhat of an anomaly; it has retained its stronghold on the club scene, staying consistently popular, night after night, year after year. While a few random rumours about the closure of Guvernment have made their circuit (selling its space to house film studios was the latest), a major $3-million transformation of the space suggests it will be around for a while yet.

When it originally opened, warehouse chic was hot (remember RPM and the Warehouse?) thanks to the post-grunge scene, so the Guvernment space was kept raw – mostly black surfaces (an excellent canvas for the multi-coloured strobes), open-dance floor (for optimum bump’n’grind), a DJ booth in the corner (because you DO NOT accost the DJ with song requests EVER) and not much else. But now its operating firm "Ink" has fancier clubs to deal with - This Is London, Ultra and Dragonfly in Niagara Falls - and in the company of that roster the Guvernment is like the slightly bloated, older brother in need of an upgrade.

Stepping in to help is Precipice Studios (The Designer Guys). The boys have systematically overhauled the main room that now is not only striking, but functionally makes more sense for today’s clubber. Where before there were no other options than the main glass-windowed VIP area overlooking the club, now there is a generous amount of banquet seating, 15 new bar stations and exclusive VIP stage booths.

There's one bartender, who I think has gotten fired, who scams money off all of her customers. Little blonde one named Linda. She's a hustler and a liar. If she's still there, I'd avoid her at all costs as she tries to scam at least $5 a drink off people. I understand it's her job to make money, but it's not her job to steal. She took a $100 from a friend of mine and claimed he gave her a $20. Not many people I know mistake $100's for $20's...

I love guvernment so much. I went there with my 4 friends just to enjoy the good time. There is this sexy guy at the front door who is so hard to penetrate no matter how we try to engage him with a sweet talks to get in free, he said "no, you can only get it with your ticket". He is a sexy hot rock with less emotion. Most of our attempt to get in free proved unproductive. One of my friends told him we look beautiful let us get in free. He said he was there to take ticket but not for the beauty reason. I was mad at him but he smiled at us after we gave him ticket....The people inside are hilarious.

My advice to everyone is that fuck what people say guv is the shit if u looking to get away from your everyday stress bullshit...just go on a Saturday night and rave all u can.. The best dirty house that no other clubs can ever offer in Toronto...guv is like a trademark of itself and it doesn't have to involve drugs all the time unless u r weak inside

I would definitely NOT recommend the Guvernment for a night out on the town. There are much nicer lounges/clubs that one can go to in the city. The reason why people hesitate to go to the Guvernment is because of the bad reviews, which are all quite true. So if you're looking for a good night, take a look at other more high scale clubs that offer a more respectful and overpowering time/group of people.

i work for koolhaus and sometimes guvernment and let me tell u, ITS A HECTIC JOB! trying to constantly tell people not to bring this and that into a club isnt the funnest thing you would expect. PEOPLE, if u know you cant bring certain stuff inside a club that you know will harm someone, then why the fuck do u guyz bring it? u know that you gotta go through security, police and bouncers first so wats the point of bringing it? i have taken so many guns and knives away from people and its ridiculous.

I hate the Guvernment. I won't go there, as it gets overpacked, and the staff is inconsiderate to downright rude to the crowd. (bartenders are nice, when they finally get to you.)

The ventilation is horrible, and it's insanely overpriced for what its worth.

I hope anyone who read the above review in order to assess whether or not the GUV is a place worth trying out was not deterred by this author's vulgar words.
I agree with her, that the GUV is a fantastic place; the people there are generally very friendly (including those dressed to impress), which I attribute to the undefinable crowd. You will find patrons between the ages of 19 and 50 (and probably younger and older), and from various ethnicities, professions, tastes, etc.
I have never had to wait more than a couple of minutes for a drink, and, although the lines are generally long, they move very quickly (and i have never seen unwarranted attitude from the bouncers/security at the GUV).
The only drawback has nothing to do with the club, but with Toronto's urban night-life-seeking community. The GUV has been popular for a very long time, and at present it seems that some people think it is just not cool to like the GUV. They opt for the newer, trendier places that cater to a certain crowd, only to realize that the lack of diversity of these other places means that only one type of person will like it there.
The decor at the GUV is great, the lights are great, the events are great, the bathrooms are in good working order (all things considering), coat check is reliable, lines move quickly, no one will feel left out here, and as long as you leave your pretentions at the door, you will find everyone is quite friendly.

I got drunk and had sex with 7 different guys in one night. It was a trippy night. Theres so many rooms i almost got lost, but the people were so nice...they always knew where i wanted to go (the bathroom)
i wish i could fuck that many people a night at other clubs but only the guvernment has that many easy people walkign around throughout the entire night. yippeeeee
