The concept couldn’t be simpler, nor could it be more in line with the times, but somehow no one in Toronto has thought of it until now: The Grilled Cheese. Whether it’s economically driven or not, we’ve seen a proliferation of spots in Toronto offering upscale takes on comfort food standards, and food doesn’t get much more comforting than the classic grilled cheese sandwich. Melted cheese between two pieces of bread - so simple and yet so delicious.
Open in the spot that used to house Goed Eten, a hole-in-the-wall Belgian Waffle joint in Kensington Market, The Grilled Cheese comes in with a well-tested menu and a built-in customer base. Unlike most spots in Kensington, the sandwich shop stays open late to serve residents, visitors, and those with the late night munchies (I can’t imagine better placement than across the street from the ever-coveted patio of Ronnie's Local 069).
Kensington resident Rob Yuill had been working at a similar spot in New York (called Grilled Cheese NYC, naturally) when the rent went up exponentially overnight. Rather than think of new idea, Rob moved the menu to Toronto wholesale. And in case you’re wondering, yes, it consists of more than just one item. There are about eight sandwiches on the menu, all variations of the classic grilled cheese, and all made with fresh ingredients bought every morning from Kensington Market. There are also a few rotating homemade soups and chilis served in the wood-worn shop.
A message at the top of the handwritten chalkboard menu reads "just like you, the sandwich grew up." This a fair motto, because even the so-called "Classic" consists of Monterey Jack, Cheddar, Provolone, and Tomato – a far stretch from the Kraft Singles and Wonderbread recipe of your childhood. Other choices include the popular Black Jack (Jalapeno Monterey Jack, Tomato, Spinach, and Black Olive Pesto) and Dill-icious (Dill Havarti, Basil Pesto, Sundried Tomato, and Onion). Each sandwich comes fresh off the grill and is served with some tortilla chips and a container of homemade hummus. A simple formula, yes, but one that everyone can agree on.

15 Reader Reviews | Hours state they are open at 11am. I called the day before to make sure they were in fact open. That way during my lunch hour I'm not wasting any time. No one picked up so I assume they are closed. I call again the next day hoping to giving it a go the second time around. A gentleman picks up and states they'll be open at 12:30pm rather than at 11am. Great...that's fine because that's right during my lunch hour. I get there it's closed. I see people inside so I knock. They see me, but don't bother opening. So then I persist. It's cold outside and I made the trip especially for this purpose. Finally a girl decides to open the door. She tells me they'll be open at 1pm instead. Where does that leave me? Useless service. They are still fairly 'new'.... they should get their act together. Not going to bother visiting again any time in the future.

I ducked in there yesterday accompanied by my very cute girlfriend. It was a cool afternoon and the tomato soup and grilled cheese sandwich were exactly what was needed for a short rest break and warmup. Tasty, economical, comfortable, friendly, great location....what more could one want?

I have no idea what some of you guys are talking about. I loved my Mushroom lover's grill cheese (Not sure if that's what it's called). I was there at 11:30am today and they were open. I don't like to over-stuff myself with food (especially if it's with melted cheese), so the portions worked out just fine for me. It totally hit the spot.

I schlepped there from my office today, eager to try out a new lunch place, and it was still closed...at 1:30. I won't be schlepping back anytime soon.

I had a classic with bacon. Pricey, tough to eat, not filling. Tasty enough I guess, but a bit of a let-down.

Don't trust those opening hours. They couldn't even open by 1:30pm today.

Cute and quaint. Great for the weather cooling down. Wish there was just a cheap and dirty regular grilled cheese sandwich though.

Very great entry to the kensington Market scene. But it is really just... grilled cheese. Some other types would be great.

Grilled Cheese. Not much else. Cute spot though.

Hole in the wall. A greasy one at that.

Can't find a lot here other than the grilled cheese, but a sweet place to keep in mind for a snack! If you're visiting Kensington, stop by and take a peek! Novelty sandwiches, which is all they have.

You have posted the wrong phone number for this 'cheese' spot. How can we get a hold of them to find out if they have lactose free options (most likely none)?!!! Please update.

The grilled cheese was worthy of it's reputation at our first visit, but not so spectacular the second time around (again, it was during a lunch rush). Both experiences proved that the sandwiches are much more inventive, and much tastier, than other places in the area. Overall they offer a great deal for the quality!
