erfectly situated to capture the young and the ravenous Roncesvalles crowd, this fluorescently lit wood-burning joint supplements typical diner fare with novelties like grilled chicken with skin-on fries, all-day breakfasts and wood-roasted pizza adorned with hefty amounts of cheese.
Giving the wood-burning oven trend a diner tweak, the Freshwood Grill has a very Rosedale Diner meets the Rivoli meets Wolfgang Puck vibe about it, meaning that it’s rife with a lot of classic Tweener Roncesvalles neighbourhood signifiers that offer a kind of comfort, a kind of overstuffed-couch security blanket in the never-ending restaurant cycle. But, as is so often the case, all you might be doing when you eat there is denying the inevitable with an overdose of the temporarily fashionable: the super-average breakfasts, the menu brimming with “wrap” sandwiches, like the highly agreeable roasted vegetable wrap.
The Freshwood Grill is the kind of place you should run to immediately and try, because the fare is worth the trek and there’s some fine-looking Roncesvallians filling the patio. Ultimately, what you find in a place like this, Smoke-Lover, is not the kind of repast that transports you to the Land of Taxidermied Marlins. From where I stand, and that’s pretty much precisely level with Technicolor diners, sooner or later you’re going to realize that our Freshwood Grill is only a brief pit stop along the way to deeper meaning. That its lovely four cheese pizza on wood-roasted flatbread, or a grilled radicchio salad with toasted walnuts and Gorgonzola, smoked in the same wood burning oven are only going to blind you from the setting solar inevitability for so long. That, in the end, it’s a kind of foodie funhouse peopled by locals who really like eating wood-roasted vegetable wraps at bistros. And that, even if that’s OK with you, it should never be the End All Be All.
At that point, you’ll either enjoy it and return with a bunch of girls all wearing brand new Miss Sixty Jeans, or you won’t, secretly suspicious that maybe what I’m trying to explain is that there’s some kind of mystery at work on this sunny strip of Roncesvalles. That, in fact, for years there was a suffering greasy spoon in this location that’s all but been erased by a thoughtful menu, a surprisingly fun dining room, not to mention sexy outdoor seating. But – day in, day out – that’s as close to a welcome upgrade as any of us ever gets. Order big, eat happy, and lie only as much as you can get away with. - A.J.

Folks, PLEASE don't waste your time or money on this underwhelming,
simply craptacular restaurant. From day one, Freshwood Grill has provided its paying customers with sub-standard fare. I agree with tht eposter about the Tandoori Chicken Wrap - I too found it completely unedible.
This poor excuse for a restaurant underwent a refurbishment - which really didn't amount to much. It's just too damn bad that the owner didn't think to overhaul the quality of the food, or even hire decent cooks.
Do yourselves a favor, and give this one a SERIOUS PASS!

I loved this place and have been there a lot (I work and live within blocks). One night I went there for dinner and there was a family beside us, parents and 2 kids. The kids both had chicken for dinner and their chicken was raw. The parents discovered this in front of me after one of the kids spit out the raw chicken. The manager didn't even come over and the waiter only took off the chicken, not the whole meal. I was really shocked, especially since the parents barely reacted.
My meal that day and every time before was cooked all the way through so I thought perhaps it was a once off, although a really bad one that could have ended in the children becoming extremely ill.
i went back a couple times after that. once was for breakfast (eggs benedict with goat cheese), which was so horrible I couldn't even eat it. I instantly felt ill and within an hour was rushing for the bathroom, my body was screaming to get the bit of food I had eaten out of it instantly.
again, I have them the benefit of the doubt. I always have eggs benedict and goat cheese when I have breakfast out if it's available, but I'd never had it there before, perhaps it was just a meal I wasn't meant to eat at Freshwood.
The last time I was there I had a salad with chicken and, just like before, my chicken was not cooked. NOT COOKED. CHICKEN. THAT THEY EXPECTED ME TO EAT. RAW. CHICKEN.
It's too much. For all the nice meals I've eaten there, I'd rather not risk being poisoned, and I'd like to have the freedom to stray from my regular dish from time to time without the very real possibility of ordering something I thoroughly enjoy at many - many - other restaurants being completely inedible and sending me to the bathroom.

My husband and I just discovered the Freshwood Grill, and we've been back several times. The prices are amazing and the food is excellent. I particularly like their commitment to using organic meat and produce. The service is sometimes a bit slow, but the servers are always friendly. My only complaint is that the dining room is too crowded, but other than than, it's a lovely low-key place to relax and have a glass of wine with an amazing meal

I love this place. Amazing food, the owner is always so nice as well as the rest of the staff and I'm very grateful that is so close by!!
The only complaint is that it gets smokey but I think it's great and would highly recommend the place. Fantastic patio btw!

Visited on a slow Sunday evening (after deciding to try again despite a bad experience here before - actually my mom, sister and I all got sick a day or two after dining here last year). Anyway, although the waiter was friendly, he screwed up almost every part of our order. Some examples: forgot to bring our appetizer, forgot which side I ordered with my sandwich, brought the wrong beers, etc.
I had the Tandoori Chicken wrap which was COMPLETELY void of flavour (how do you do that with tandoori???). The salad drowned in a heavy sesame oil dressing - not even edible and I'm not so picky when I'm hungry.
Overall, we were VERY disappointed with the food and forgetful, unapologetic service and we won't be returning.
