  • The Drake Hotel

What was to be an ‘urban crash pad,’ has taken a left turn and has been unleashed as a boutique with a wildly original look and feel. Unburdened by the hotel’s odd new-meets-old imperative and the loud design fusion of Rorschach ink blots and replicated old-bar furniture intermingled with delicate hanging art, and a dramatic stairway that separates restaurant from bar, the hotel restaurant is a toy-shop delirium.

Getting to the dining area is not for the timid though; you and your party will push your way through the lounge area - solo, you won’t be guided - where you’ll be ogled at and appropriately rated by the crowd. And when you get there, you still won't be freed from the lounge area; it’s really one large rumpus room with diners, sushi barflies and party kids each in their respective areas.

For appetizers, our busy server told us that the foie gras (Drake Terrine) served with a pungent black currant tea, is a top draw for diners. However, the host (running over to spread the Drake joy) says to go the sushi route. We go all imaginable routes. Soon, sushi plates, shrimp, and a random selection of menu items are whipped around the table.

Advisors were wrong; an order of shrimp - seared and served with tofu and citrus-dressed green salad - was an absolute winner. As for Sushi Chef Michi Tanaka's sushi, the organic salmon roll was actually two-bite sized babies, and the Portobello mushroom roll, marinated with truffle oil and dried tomato, oddly enough, had more bite than the salmon roll.

Among the top entrée choices was a seared salmon. A six-ounce, pan-seared fillet is topped with a delectable blend of honey mushrooms, and side of potatoes. With the rich, full-bodied flavour and the pronounced saltiness of added oysters, this is an excellent option.

After being on a waiting list for more than an hour to go to the upstairs patio and watching other people going upstairs through the back door, I promised myself never ever to come back to the Drake Hotel!!! They should be thankful that I went all the way to that pathetic place so far away from the Downtown! Don't even bother taking the trip to the Drake hotel, unless you want to be turned down by the most arrogant and unfriendly staff. And believe me, you will be! You will be stuck in the middle of nowhere in the Queen West area, with no other club within the walking distance to go to.

I've visited The Drake several times now, usually in the P.M at the downstairs bar, or the SkyLounge. This week however my friend and I wanted to enjoy the beautiful Toronto afternoon with a bottle of wine on a sunny patio. The Drake seemed like the perfect spot, we chose a little table in the sun and although it was on an extreme angle we were happy to be sitting.
The service started out just fine, the server came over with a wine list and made a recommendation for a bottle of pinot noir, we weren't interested in spending $60 for the bottle so we thanked him and chose a bottle of Barbarelle in the $45 range. 25 minutes later the bottle arrived, only it wasn't what we had ordered. I mentioned this to the server who informed me they didn't have what I wanted but this was the closest thing. I accepted that answer as truth and he opened the wine. It was a nice bottle, only thing is when the bill came 15 minutes after we asked for it, we had been charged $55 for the wine. The fact that we were not notified about the price difference was incredibly tacky. The Drake may get away with mediocre service and food, because of its prime location but I know now that I will never choose to spend my money there again.

This review is based on more than one visit and second and third chances have been used up. Though nicely renovated, The Drake is probably the most pretentious, wannabe artsy lounge in the thriving "Liberty Village" area. Service can be great IF you are European. Otherwise expect to be served last and go to the downstairs washroom while other "white" patrons are favoured. That is a critique of most of its staff (not all) although previous experiences would suggest otherwise. On the up side, the atmosphere is contemporary and chic and thankfully not all their patrons are like their staff.

What a miserable waste of a beautiful place. More than an hour, on a slow night, waiting for a simple dish. Lukewarm apologies. No staff to inquire about our missing plates after 45 minutes.

The Drake is over. The scene SUCKS.

OMG!, I had such a great time on April 12th at the Drake, my friend meet the promoter of the Drake at some other party called the Bunny Hop a few weeks ago. We booked some dinner through him and stayed for GDP. Hip hop and lots of dance stuff- it was a great dance party and everyone was having a great time- would go the patio and have a smoke and come down- all the staff were very friendly- and I had one of the best times in Toronto and by far the best time on a Thursday- I wanted to spread the word because I can't imagine how crazy its going to get when the weather gets better-

I LOVE the Drake, for a romantic dinner or a hot night out! BUT I made the mistake of finaggling myself and beau in for lunch during Winterlicious. We were successful and scored a lovely seat but in turn, our waitress was all about ATTITUDE and our burger might have been the WORST ever. Flat, dry, tastless, served with NOTHING...and apparently, that's what it was all about??!! I was thankful for the seat but in tears over the food. Being on the hunt for the best burger in town, the Drake disappointed me completely. My picks so far: Bymark #1, Beaconsfield #2, The Drake # 999,999,999,999.

It's my first time reviewing any establishment but it needed to be done.
My wife and I came to Toronto (from the states) in order to attend a funeral. We had one day left and decided to go out.... not really expecting to enjoy ourselves due to the circumstances of our visit to your city. We had wanted to have dinner but the house was full and no room was available in the dining room. There was some space in the lounge but we found it uncomfortable due to the low tables. The staff were all very friendly but since it was busy noone really took time to answer our questions or inform us on the nights events. On the way out a waitress literally bumped into us and an immediate apology was given but she noticed we were feeling a bit out of place. She tried to find out if there was any way to squeeze us in for a seating in the dining room and when it wasn't possible she actually took the time to request and make reservations at another establishment with our promise to return afterwards for some cocktails. We were amazed at her attention and hospitality. When we returned we were in a packed lounge (Saturday night.........) and from across the second bar we made eye contact with the same waitress and she immediately came over and asked us how our night was going. She then took us on a tour of the Drake and was able to get us past a huge line up to get up to the roof top patio. We could not believe how attentive she was even though we weren't even her customers. When I heard about this website I decided to take time to let everyone know that there still are people who are sincerely nice and giving. She managed to put smiles on our faces even at a time of sorrow. I've read over other reviews that have been submitted and am not surprised that this server had touched other peoples lives. Thank you Betty for giving us a moment of happiness in your city. If we are ever in town we will be back..... hopefully for dinner this time!

had dinner the other nite (saturday nov. 11) and was impressed with the quality of service that my friends and i received. we arrived late and even though we had no reservation we were attended to quickly and were even escorted personally by one of the staff members. the lounge was packed (to much for our liking) and the dining room was starting to be taken over by groups that appeared to be getting bottle service. our server was one of the most friendliest waitresses we have ever had and she treated us as if we were the only ones in the room, regardless of the overflowing bodies that only grew in numbers as the minutes clicked by. She made us feel at home and had us laughing to a point we couldn't stop. Her sense of humour was refreshing and overwhelming.......(but good overwhelming). We were sad when our experience ended, and while paying the bill we promised ourselves and Betty that we would definitely return, if for anything another experience with the outstanding service we received. The food was ok.......(I don't recommend the veal....... the duck was amazing) but it's always the quality of service that brings us back to queen street west. THANKS BETTY!!!!!!

I was at the drake last weekend, and was shocked to see such a large line, I was alone- I was told to ask for some guy named Vladimir, much to my surprise a very tall young man came outside to greet upon request from the doorguy, he asked if we had meet previously and I told me that I was late and alone, he brought me to my party- and I had a great time.

Throught the evening- he would stop by and say hello- what a great place/ great music/ a lot of attractive men-

    loved it
ask for Vlad ppl- who is great

What I can't understand is how this place makes the top lists all the time? Best crowd? Certaintly not. Best food? Certainly not. Best music? Most Certainly not. The problem with The Drake is that it can't decide who it's target market is. Is it hispters? Rockers? Grungers? Hip Hoppers? Hippies? No worries because it targets it all. Maybe I am overlooking something and this is a good thing but everytime I have ever been there I spend more time being amused by the diverse and grubby crowd while sitting on a patio that resembles a friend's backyard deck complete with hideous furniture and light fixtures, then paying any attention to my bad drinks. And the restroom? The co-oed ones in the hall? You can just imagine how clean they are, and no...they certainly don't smell like flowers!

Don't waste your time if you think you are going to go here to mingle with a hot crowd. There are many more tastefully decorated bars in T.O. on College or King St. or Yorkville that will cater to your desire for a good cocktail in a swanky setting. Don't be fooled as swank this is NOT. Maybe I've missed the allure to this place and everything I said, is everything they are trying to accomplish.

What a wonderful oasis. The diversity of the crowd in all areas, the interesting menus from dining room to cocktails, the attention to eclectic detail in d?cor make this so special. There is no outdoor patio more comfortable and dynamic than the rooftop in the summer. If dinner is what you?re looking for, the dining room is an experience all it?s own. Maybe heading towards loud by the end of dinner as the music and energy of the lounge, combined with the anticipation papable in the patio queue tumble into the dining area. Early dinner might be best. Fondue fries are perfect guilty pleasure, and dessert deserves attention. Upstairs the patio menu is enough to satisfy a nosh, and cocktails are provided with attention and care. If you are looking for a destination for anyone who can carry on an intelligent conversation and is looking for something more than the homogeneous type of clubland/downtown experience, then head for the Drake. Drinks on the patio, dinner downstairs then back to the patio as weather permits. Fabulous yet without the pretentious doormen and selective service.

going out to have a good time!
    February 19, 2005
I sit and read over the many reviews submitted not only to your website, but to many others and i can't help but wonder what happened to "going out to have a good time"? People these days look for things to complain about from the second they walk pass doorways that are held open for them. Get over yourselves already!!!! What happened to JUST GOING OUT TO HAVE FUN???? Everybody wants.... or should i say THINKS they're "somebody" and watch out if you don't treat them that way!!!! I have read good and bad comments on the Drake and all I can do is laugh. I frequent this establishment once and awhile and have always had an amazing time. The food, although not consistent, is always satisfying. The drinks.... come on really after the third who can really tell????? The service.... that is what keeps me coming back!!!! Managers always ready to bend over backwards for you, bartenders always attentive, and cocktail servers fighting through packed lounges and patios in o rder to quench your thirst. Sat back and watched the servers tonight and wondered "how can they do it???" So glad to see Joey back, and even happier to see Betty back in the lounge!!! Now there is someone who makes anyone feel at home regardless of your sex.... not seen often.... someone who is truely loved by males and females (I think more by females.... it must be those dimples and genuine quality). My advice to people.... when going out remember why you are out and get over yourselves.... it's all about having a good time!!! Negative energy.... take it elsewhere and let others enjoy the Drake!!!

I went to Brassaii for the first time last Saturday night and we had a great time. We were three couples and we just had drinks and some appetizers at the bar, but the food was great, the drinks were quick and cold... attentive service by a very busy bartender. It was really busy at the bar and we were never overlooked. I like the decor..not your usual T.O decor. We enjoyed ourselves and will definately be back.

I've been to places where the food was outstanding but the service and atmosphere were terrible and I would not go to those places again. Perhaps the food at Brassaii will go far and it will become a great place since everything else is top notch.

Very tasty and very nice, filling portions. The service is unequaled for an inexpensive restaurant. Often you'll go to an inexpensive place where the service is commensurate with the prices, but this isn't so at Brassaii. The waiters are prompt and courteous. I couldn't believe how quickly the food arrived (perhaps a problem, but nonetheless...) and the atmosphere is very pleasant.

The Drake defines the word cool! The come as you are additude makes the over all feeling of the Drake warm and inviting. not the best recommendation for a date, because of the full bar area and the hip Queen St crowd you might just want to leave your love ones at home!

Went to the Drake Hotel on a Sunday evening and was taken aback by the mood and atmosphere it presented. Looked like it was from the 50's/60's high class hotel atmosphere. Floor level was a plush, low lighted lounge with tons of comfy seating and cushions. Head up to the rooftop patio and enjoy the warm air and cool drinks. Expect to see the neighbourhood crowd and others who are looking to get off of the 'mainstrip'. Had a great time, will definitely go back.

They have a achieve the marriage of reto-modern by maintaining the character of the venue. A casually stylish feel draws an interesting crowd with a taste for something different

I went for the first time last weekend for a friend?s birthday. I got there around 10:30 and was at the back of the line. The only reason it was moving is because people were leaving the line to go someplace else. Lucky for me the birthday girl spotted me and came outside for a cigarette and than pulled me inside with her. It has the feel of a really funky living room that you want to hang out in everyday. Great Queen West crowd (ah the people watching). The service was good; the wait staff is all very friendly. I didn't get to take the tour and go check out the patio because we got pretty cozy at our table and didn't want to loose our spot. I'll definitely go back. But maybe next time I'll leave a little earlier (I hear they don't have a guest list).
